Youth and our communities
Granados' book has given me much to think about. It has changed my approach to working within my community.

Community. Community. Where's my community?
Deleon-Granados employs a narrative style of case studies to support his thesis that top-down approaches to community policing have failed. Agencies cannot simply "order up" or impose a community to create social control among the citizenry. Functioning communities grow from the ground up, though opportunities do exist for public and private agencies to foster and support positive channels. Though covering an academic topic, Deleon-Granados avoids the jargon and esoterica normally found in such treatments. His narrative approach renders an easy read of a tough subject.

A different outlook
Travels Through Crime and Place is a fine example of how people can work together to solve serious crime without the use of force, or with the typical "lock 'em up and throw away the key" mentality. Our justice and crime reduction tactics obviously are NOT working since a huge percentage of our population is in prison. It is high time for a new way of thinking. Deleon-Granados offers fresh ideas for the future.

An Good alround Computing book
This book covers almost all of the information needed for A Levle.

I would recomend purchasing it in prefrance to other revisoion books.

Simply the best
Quite simply, this is the best general purpose computing book I have ever read. It would say it is absolute essential for A-level students, but also has an awful lot to offer anyone else, as this will act as a superb reference book for many years to come. If you are studying computing in any form, then you are doing yourself an injustice by not owning this superb book....

no title
If you are an A level computing student, I strongly recommend you to buy this book. Most information in the book is up to date. Color printed, which can always keep you awake. Even if you feel the book not enough for you, it provides some web site for you to reinforce the book.

A Keeper
This is a book that may be the addendum to the classic, "everything I know, I learned in Kindergarten." A book of quotes or laws would have been boring , but the author includes such witty insights. "PARKERS OBSERVATION. men seldom make passes / At girls who wear glasses. POGREBIN'S AMENDMENT. Boys don't make passes at female smartasses." A book to treasure

The Dice Are Hidden
A wonderfully-crafted and edited collection of unwritten maxims -- many of which I have often improperly quoted -- Hugh Rawson's volume clears up many misconceptions and offers insightful historical anecdotes to amplify many of the "laws" than most of us live by (without acknowledging them).

Perhaps the most metaphysical of all is "Haldane's Observation;" that God doesn't play with dice (echoed in Einstein's theory that all of the universe's movements/activities are ultimately understandable). Rawson cleverly adds Stephen Hawking's contradictory observation that God not only shoots dice, but that they often land where man can't find them.

Totally enjoyable and entertaining, can be read straight through or left on the shelf as a "reference book," to be taken down as the occasion merits.

Witty and Informative
This book is full "field-tested" wisdom that I would suggest to anyone.

The Best Book For The Beginner
Being a beginning watercolorist I knew I needed some help, so I searched all over for a good book on the subject but was unsuccessful. Then I found this book and I'll have to say it is excellent. It covers many of the techenics that new watercolorist need to know like how to stretch paper, the use of masking fluid, how to set up a still life, and how the watercolors work. I recommend this book to everbody that's interested in becoming the serious watercolorist.

A useful guide on watercolour techniques
As a novice watercolour painter and devoted bibliophile, I have found a new way of spending my hard-earned money: Watercolour books. However, this one might be one of the last I buy, as it's really useful. bought the book yesterday and I am delighted with it. The advice on how to do things is sound, and this is a book that encourages you to find your own style and shows you how the same image may be rendered in such a different way by different people. Unlike other books I own, this one is not only a set of beautiful pictures. In fact, I didn't like some of the art displayed in it, but this is in fact a plus, as it shows the variety of styles and effects you can achieve with watercolour. I know that there are other techniques not displayed in this book, but as a beginning step it's definitely worth every penny. It's got a lot of demos (which are implicitly exercises) and it might end up being a classic on the subject.

Watercolor School by Hazel Harrison is an excellent resource
This book is an exceptional resource for the watercolorist. I highly recommend this book for both beginner and advanced artists. Terms are explained in plain English. Many watercolor techniques are reviewed and numerous artist's works are described in detail. Hazel Harrison has also written Acrylic School and Pastel School for Readers Digest, and they are all excellent reference sources. I recommend them to all my students.

When Hippo Was Hairy: And Other Tales from Africa

WHEN hippo was hairy, when lion could fly, when elephant was
We bought three book by nick greaves while travel in south Africa. We buy books for our three grandchildren( age 4,6,8) while travelling in South Africa last year. We have given them so many books through the years from around the world. They love these books so much. First the parents read to them, every night now the oldest reads to the younger ones. I wish the author writes more books for children.

Kids Love It!
My 9-year old son came home from school today very excited about this book, which his teacher had started reading to the class. He took out his wallet, counted his money, and asked, "Can we go on line and buy this book right now? I have enough of my own money to buy it." This is enough proof for me that kids love it.

More then a children book
The sub-title "And other tales from Africa" seems to suggest that this book was written for children, but it is fun to read for adults as well. Nick Greaves tells stories, tales, fables and legends from the African tribes about different animals and after each section gives facts about them. By doing this especially for tourists the book gives a general idea of the wildlife one might come across while traveling in Africa and furthermore the book supplies the not native speaker with useful vocabulary. The illustrations of Rod Clement are just as good as photos, sometimes even better, because good close-ups of mainly the small and nocturnal animals are quite rare. "When Hippo Was Hairy" was followed up by "When Lion Could Fly", which is highly recommendable, too.

Critique of To Love as God Loves
To Love as God Loves Critique By Mark R. Braden

The title of this book, To Love as God Loves, challenges the reader to apply God's love in our approach to life. Bondi through select passage of Christian literature challenges us to see how "Godly love" should be striven for in His kingdom. In order to achieve that goal we must look at the commonality of our existence as men and women in God's world and be aware of what human frailties interfere with our ability to love. We must first come to fundamentally understand what is God's love and what is God's plan to use love as the foundational principal and keystone in upon which to build our life. Roberta C. Bondi effectively uses early Christian literature to present situational circumstances that can be used as metaphors of understanding God's love in our contemporary world.

Since love can assume so many different forms and be at many times be conceptual and the relationship of love to man can be situational to many different applications. Bondi's use of many different illustration' from historic Christian authors, give substance and fullness to our understanding of what love is and can be. To love, as God would have us love is to be continually aware of our relationship to our fellow man and how that relationship plays to God's intention of what he requires of loving subjects. I believe that Roberta C. Bondi accomplished her goal. She logically sets forth defining her terms, presents us with a current (albeit historical view) look at love and what keeps man from loving as God intended. She further presents solid arguments as to how human nature is conflicted by our passions and then presents us with a solution of prayer so that we might reach that, "...partially covered over but still existing image of God" (p.79) that remains with in us. She then confronts us with her image of what is God's love which she sums up by saying, "God loves beyond your dreams, extravagantly, without limit" (p.101). To love, as God wants us to love is to look within each of us and to examine our most basic of motivations in relationship with our fellow man. The early Christian mystics had insights into our humanity that exposed our human frailties as well as our ability to discern God's intent in his kingdom. Through Bonds' reflections on the early writings of the church, we see that Christian love is and has been what God's kingdom is truly and simply all about.

IMITATION OF GOD'S LOVE
Contemporary christians find themselves in a secular culture that demands their allegiance and conformity. As a people of faith, they find themselves capture in culture which eventually lead to the erosion and compromise of their beliefs. How does one deal with this struggle? Is it possible to love as god loves by breaking away from those cultural mores that we find most dear? Bondi addresses those questions and more as she leads us into a conversation with the early monastic who had similar challenges.

To truly love as God means incorporating a new definition of love and humility that goes beyond our present secular understanding. A dialogue with the Desert fathers and mothers enables us to weed out those stumbling blocks which hinder us from loving ourselves, our neighbors and our God. This text serves as a key of understanding how God loves and how we can imitate that love.

Renewed my faith in Christ and the church
In an easy to read manner, Bondi addresses a "stodgy topic" (the early monastics) and transforms it into an INSIGHTFUL, Transforming look at what it means to be a Christian who loves as God loves. This book made me think that their is hope for the organized church. It made me realize that Christianity has a vital, intense and prophetic role to call people not just to know god but LOVE as God Loves

WONDERFUL!
This is another installment in P. C. Doherty's Chaucer series. The Franklin tells the tale of a young squire, Richard Greenele, sent on a mission by his Knight as he lays dying on the battlefield. Richard finds out that he is really a noble and begins a quest to unravel the mystery behind his father's downfall. This is a story of the coming of age of young Richard as well as a wonderful mystery full of murder and deceit.

P.C Doherty is in my opinion the best writer of historical mysteries out there. This book kept me riveted. I loved it.

OUTSTANDING!
Quite an excellent book. Doherty perfectly intermingles the pilgrim's conversations with the story told by the franklin. A page-turner and nearly impossible to put it down; I read it in two days! This book has all the classic murder mystery parts: death, sex, intrique, romance, and for those medieval fans, knights, ladies, verderers, castles, and of course those pilgrims. A five out of five stars!

A serious page-turner
Having read and enjoyed The Man of Law's Tale and The Knight's Tale, I was expecting to find The Franklin's Tale to be no less intriguing. My expectations were far exceeded. I was scarcely able to put it down, and, when I had finished it, I got my husband to read it, and HE couldn't put it down, either. This book is more "gothic" in flavor than the previous two, and perhaps that why I enjoyed it more. This has all the markings of a classic, one that I'll read again and again.

Inspirational
If you have children participating in athletics, this book is a must for their reading list. I couldn't put it down. Read it from cover to cover in one night and then went back and re-read it to appreciate it further. Just when you think that the trials and tribulations in your life are all encompassing, you realize that life is suddenly much better than you imagined it to be. Wonderful read.

Enlightening
This book is about more than just the obstacles and victories in sports; it gives insight into how players can get the most out of their sports career and LIFE. It is a WONDERFUL book that high school and college students and their parents should read. My 3 children who are in Middle School and High School read it and loved it.

I love this book!
I did get the book and I must say that I can't put it down. Just tonight I read another chapter with my pen and highlighter by my side. It is so cool to see athletes with the same dreams, beliefs, problems, and aspirations. I have told my friends about the book, and there is a line to get it after I have finished it. Thanks again for providing a book that can reach, teach, and motivate an athlete

Writing Memories
Turning Memories into Memoirs is recommended to be read by people who have thought about writing their personal memories. If you have failed to begin writing your memories because of not knowing how to start, Turning Memories into Memoirs, by Denis Ledoux is an excellent book to read. I strongly recommend this book because it guides the reader on a step-by-step process that will help you to accomplish personal and family stories-one after the other.

Throughout the readings of this book you can find ways in which you can incorporate your stories by writing on specific topics, special people in your lifetime, or special events that have made you the person you are today. By following the techniques described in this book such as chronological, thematic or biographical writing, your stories will be shaped in such a way that your family will be beneffited by keeping the record of your family history.

Animate Your Memories
Few of us are blessed with the recorded memories of our parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents. Perhaps, until recently, many of us gave little thought to preserving our memories for family members who follow us. The idea that "ordinary" people possess life experiences holding the power to reassure, encourage, and inspire their grandchildren and great-grandchildren is increasingly gaining attention and respect.

Maybe, on your own initiative, you have decided to strengthen the bond you have created with your grandchildren by beginning to record your life experiences to share with them. Or, maybe for some time, your children have been pestering you to record your memories.

But, perhaps you have written little in years. Or, perhaps you have only a slight notion of the procedure for this seemingly daunting task of composing memoirs. Denis Ledoux, author of Turning Memories Into Memoirs, understands the uncertainties that can overwhelm when we do not know how and where to begin writing the stories of our lives. Convinced that "everybody's got a story," Ledoux, a published fiction and non-fiction writer with years of experience teaching at both the secondary and university level, has incorporated the sum of his skills and knowledge into his Turning Memories Into Memoirs. His additional fourteen years of experience in teaching life story writing workshops provide first-hand expertise in the instruction of memoir writing.

Ledoux's Turning Memories Into Memoirs offers advice for planning and adhering to a regularly scheduled writing time. This memory writng guide will enable you to write memories that your family members will want to read again and again by teaching you to include and focus on the elements fundamental to all successful storytelling. Ledoux teaches you how to organize and prioritize your stories so that you will be sure to begin with memories that best exemplify the life you have lived. His in-depth discussion of the requisite for truthful storytelling and advice for dealing with controversy provides guidance for first-time storytellers facing the dilemma of wanting to write honestly without being harsh or offensive. Just a few other topics covered are "memory jogs," painful memories, the avoidance of preaching, and "the finished product." Included, you will also find memoirs written by Ledoux's workshop participants. Ledoux's guide is comprehensive yet concise and answers virtually every question you might have when you write your memoirs.

The Complete guide to memoir writing
This book can change your life. It has all the information, enthusiasm and tools you need to turn your own experiences into a successful book.. Even more important, it can help you see the beauty and magic of daily life, examine your inner self , begin to heal the hidden wounds, and recognize your deepest feelings and fondest dreams. It can help you find order and meaning in the chaos of existence and give you a glimpse of who you are and what you really want to be.

The author's advice is simple to understand and easy to follow. All you need to do is drop your inhibitions. "..start with the writing skills you have. As you write you will learn more about writing and your skills will increase." He tells us Writing is our best teacher.

Author Ledoux feels that most people are afraid of writing and his book shows you how to overcome your fears and produce interesting, dramatic meaningful stories. He breaks writing a book down into parts and guides you through one step at a time. To begin he shows you how to make time for writing by following a schedule of pages or time . He helps you shift through your memories and choose which ones to write about. He helps you see and describe details that make your stories come alive . He shows you how to do interviews and intensive research, how to choose a point of view, how to avoid cliches, redundancies and stereotypes, how to be precise and clear.

Not only every writer, but every reader can benefit from this book. By introducing you to the ancient art of storytelling, it reaffirms the meaning of life.. It takes you on a magical journey back in time and gives you the tools to become the bridge to connect your ancestors to your descendants.

Not Bad, Just Not The Best
I think this author was trying to get some [easy] recognition with the title he chose, maybe making the reader think it was similar to the Kessler book Moscow Station. Unfortunately for this author that is where the similarity ends. The author was the KGB station Chief for the Washington D.C. USSR embassy for a number of years during the cold war. He promises on the dust jacket to provide the reader with an inside account of the methods of the station and a run down of the missions they took part in.

The author does a good job in providing the reader with many of the interesting tradecraft bit about the KGB in the U.S. and how they operated in Washington D.C. against the FBI. The author also does give us some insight to a few of the operations that the KGB ran; it just seams to me that this is a sanitized version of the events. I wanted more details on the intelligence they were able to gather and more of the operations they ran. I finished the book think this was a nice first step, but a fuller "confession" was needed.

Overall, the book is adequately written and does not drag or stumble. If you are interested in KGB operations in the U.S. then this is a nice start, but definitely the definitive account

rave revue
fantastic! informative! riveting! find out what really went on during thoze years in th CIA & KGB. one of the best books i have ever read.

Thrilling!!
