Sociology: Themes and Perspectives

The Last Word on Sociology
While going through the book in1986, I often wondered if a more comprehensive, lucid and well-researched book could ever be written on the subject. My conviction still remains strong after all these years. This book is quite different from the usual introductory books on sociology meant for college fresher, which come packaged with pictures, photographs, case studies, box items and rather oversized glossaries of terms. Here, the whole gamut of sociology is presented by placing relevant theories side by side, which are often in stark contrast with each other. For example, the liberal perspective which hopes that `the expansion of education will also reduce inequality in society,' is followed by a jarring Marxian argument that the educational system is a `gigantic myth-making machine which serves to legitimate inequality.' These contradictions and shifts in the theories provide adequate clarity to the reader, rendering unnecessary any further intervention by the author.

All the seminal contributions of pioneers like Durkheim, Weber, Redcliffe-Brown, Parsons, Merton and Marx, and modern perspectives of sociologists like Michael F.D.Young, Edmund Leach and R.D.Laing are explained in a succinct manner. Apart from the various sociological perspectives, vital areas like social stratification, power and politics, poverty, education, organisation, family, religion and women and society are discussed threadbare. The final two chapters namely, methodology ans sociological theories are, to my mind, the final words on the subjects. I strongly recommend this book to anybody who wants to make any headway into the subject of sociology.

To close on a personal note - I found the chapter on religion the most absorbing in this book. As the functionalists' perspective of Durkheim, Malinowski and Parsons is decimated by the sharp but convincing Marxian standpoint, the chapter reads like a thriller, that is dominated by courtroom arguments.

The Blue Bible
This must be the Bible to sociology students around the world - i don't know an A level student who's lived without it. Buy it!

Exellent starter for sociology
Everyone who wants to get a little bit deeper knowledge about sociology will find this book very helpful. It's main virtue is perfect balance between simplicity of language used and complexity of sociology itself. It is obvious that it is writen for someone who is only starting to dig into social science - but don't underestimate it for this!

The best in its class...
The best technical manual available for an easy to read understanding of those techniques and procedures used in "Method" acting. Extremely rich in detail, laced with dozens of examples and personal anecdotes, this book leaves nothing out as it takes the reader through practically every element of the "Method" and its vocabulary. Relaxation, Sense Memory, Concentration, Imagination, Substitution, Justification, Animal Exercise, Personal Object, Private Moment, Affective Memory, Song and Dance, Inner Monologue, Narrative Monologue, Speaking Out, Moment-to-Moment, and Subtext are just a few of the terms which Ms. Hull explains with crystal clarity. The book also includes advice to Directors, an exhaustive scene list, a glossary, suggested reading and tons of other valuable information. Indispensable. -- TheatrGROUP

Actors Studio member recommends Hull book
This book lays out an entire course of training exercises in the most explicit, practical, down-to-earth manner I've ever encountered. It is of enormous value to actors, directors and especially to those who teach these disciplines. Susan Strasberg wrote in the foreword: "When I read Lorrie Hull's book, I thought, 'My God, she's done it! She's caught so much of the work.' She got the answers, wrote them down, used them in her own twelve years of teaching for my father and then translated it all into an understandable, explicit, practical book that offers valuable tools for any actor [beginner or professional], as well as for writers, directors, and teachers. I'm sure a lot of misconceptions about my father's work will be cleared up by this book. After reading "Strasberg's Method," I feel sure that my father, 'Pop,' wherever he is, would be enormously pleased."

strasberg's method
An extremely helpful book for actors, directors, and acting teachers. Hull gives in-depth descriptions of exercises used by Strasberg and does a great job of telling why the exercises work with examples. The book is broken up into sections. One concentrates on the actor, another concentrates on the director, another on the teacher. Has a great section with suggestions for scenes. Highly reccommended. The appendices have been extremely useful.

ATTENTION WOMEN FROM 20 YRS TO 80 YRS. OUTSTANDING BOOK!
READ THIS BOOK IN THE 1990S. A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE WRITTEN BY A HIGHLY RESPECTED MANHATTAN PSYCHIATRIST WHO IS ALSO A GREAT WRITER. RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TOTALLY FOR ALL FEMALES WHO HAVE BEEN SOCIALIZED OR CONDITIONED TO GO ALONG TO GET ALONG. THIS BOOK IS OUTSTANDING. DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS ONE. I AM A CRISIS INTERVENTION WORKER AND HAVE RECOMMENDED THIS BOOK TO MANY.
THOUGH THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR WOMEN ONLY, IT MOST DEFINITELY SEEMS THAT WOMEN BENEFIT ENORMOUSLY FROM THIS BOOK.

DO HOPE YOU GIVE IT A READ. YOU MAY WANT TO TELL YOUR DEAREST FRIENDS AFTER YOU READ IT. IT'S SO ENLIGHTENING AND SO EMPOWERING. GOOD LUCK!

ADULT WOMEN: DON'T FAIL TO READ THIS BOOK.
NATALIE SHAINESS IS A PROMINENT PSYCHIATRIST IN MANHATTAN.
SHE HAS WRITTEN THIS ASTOUNDING BOOK BASED ON HER REMARKABLE
KNOWLEDGE OF WOMEN, SELF-ESTEEM, AND HOW TO BREAK PATTERNS OF MASOCHISTIC REACTIONS. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK HIGHLY. IT IS A LIFE CHANGING BOOK, WELL WRITTEN, EASILY UNDERSTOOD, AND QUITE CHALLENGING TO ANY PERSON INTERESTED IN SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIPS.

READ IT IN THE 1990S, AND AM READING IT AGAIN. TREMENDOUS BOOK.

A powerful guide out of victimhood
As a professional counselor I have recommended this book to many of my clients since it first appeared. They have consistently told me that Sweet Suffering has clearly and effectively described the patterns of communication and interaction with others that set us up to become unwitting victims in relationships. Also included is a powerful section called "Digging Out" which gives the tools needed to overcome these self-sabotaging habits. I wish this book would be reprinted. It's truly a classic! In my personal top ten!!!

It was great!
I'm a boy who has always been interested in flight. This is a great book because it really leads you through all of the experiences Viki Van Meter had. I could almost see Greenland from the cockpit of the plane! This book was so good that I want to take flying lessons. I think that anybody that is interested in what it is like to fly should read this book. Like I said before it's GREAT!

This book is absolutely great!
Hi!. My name is Peter. Our Dad takes us flying in a Cessna 180 and I can tell you that Vicki really captures the spirit and adventure of aviation.

My Dad let us stay up late several nights because we just couldn't put this book down. During the day, I even took it to nursery school.

I really liked the part about how Vicki keeps flying the plane even when she gets airsick in all the turbulence.

She makes my sister and me want to live a life full of adventure. We think Vicki is a great girl. She is amazing.

By following her story, she will inspire you to do amazing things, too.

It Rocks!
I really enjoyed this book because I want to become a pilot when I am old enough. It was a book that once I picked it up, I just couldn't put it down! Once it even made me have to (or want to; more likely want!) go to sleep at 12 Midnight! I found it when reshelving books at school and I just couldn't wait to start reading it. (which was around lunchtime) I really hope you enjoy it and good luck to/in your possible aviation career from being inspired from this book. I have wanted to fly for a while! Bye. (or an even better thing:buy!)

Technology As Symptom and Dream
Published in Paperback by Routledge Kegan & Paul (May, 1990)
Author: Robert D. Romanyshyn
Amazon base price: $34.95
Used price: $13.50
Average review score:

Brilliant!
One of the most interesting and original books I have read in years. Romanyshyn writes clearly and convincingly.

A daring re-visioning of technology....
...in its numinous potential, both dark and bright. Dr. Romanyshyn invites the reader to see the sense in the symptom of what we do with our linear-perspectival progress through time...and what it does to us. Highly recommended. -- Craig Chalquist, M.S., designer of the Thine Own Self self-exploration site.

Romanyshyn Calls us to Re-member Many Things...
In Technology as Symptom and Dream, Romanyshyn discovers that with the 'invention' of linear perspective vision came many changes in who we imagine ourselves to be. The mathematization of the world provided a new kind of freedom for (literally) seeing the world differently. The subject of the artist in paintings and the artist became broken up, or fragmented, through the process of using a veil based on a geometric understanding of space. Within that space one can see how the 'depth' of things changed, from a depth of levels to a depth of linear measurement. It is this frame that makes possible the anatomical view of the body, and it is the anatomical view that gives rise to the corpse, or what Romanyshyn calls the 'anatomical body' of science. We thus have a psychological and cultural division between the body as corpse and what Romanyshyn calls the 'pantomimic' body, or what phenomenology distinguishes as the 'lived body' of experience. Throughout the last 500 years we have seen these two possibilities manifest themselves in our culture. Romanyshyn has shown us that when our culture place too much of an emphasis on just one aspect of the body, certain aspects of the other (the pantomimic) show through in a not so glorious fashion. So we can understand Romanyshyn's discussion of the shadow side of the anatomical body (the witch, the madman, the monster, the anorexic) as a way of telling us what's wrong and as a remembrance for how to make things right. The pantomimic body, as a shadow of the anatomical body, reminds us that there are different ways of seeing the world, and that certain ways we think are the best (e.g. our technological worldview) come to us with a very expensive price tag.

Turner is a mad genius. Go Ted!
There is hardly a more colorful person in the history of twentieth century media than Ted Turner. He is mad, visionary, obsessed, gutsy, bi-polar, swash-buckling, touching and very likeable. Ted's CCN inspired me to push ahead with my own small technology company. After touring the early CNN headquarters in Atlanta, I brought back colorful CNN souvenir caps for my staff; and we wore them for a time in our office whenever we brain-stormed. This is a great and detailed account of Ted's adult years from family billboard company executive to AOL Time Warner vice chairman.

You'll rout for this multi-billionaire after reading the book.

Impeccably researched, an amazing man
Ted Turner's life story would make a better movie than many of the old classics he bought the rights to broadcast on his stations. From allegedly giving a sales pitch in the nude (among other things), to wild speeches in hotel lobbies, winning an incredible number of sailing races, and even his own "Alistair Cooke" style film intros, this guy is full of antics.

I was impressed by the depth of research Mr. Bibb brought to this book. I wish their was a little more of Ted quoted in the book, but this is an excellent amount of info on the man's life.

- Julia Wilkinson, author, "My Life at AOL"

Awesome
This book is masterfully written. Ted Turner's life makes for a great story. The genius of this book lies in how well Porter Bibb researched and wrote this story. I can't imagine how a person could write a better biography. I wish Mr. Bibb would write a novel or, at least, more biographies.

Speak to Sell : Using Public Speaking as a Marketing Tool
Published in Audio Cassette by Sullivan Speaker Services Inc. (02 January, 2001)
Author: Vickie K. Sullivan
Amazon base price: $34.95

Just the facts
Vickie Sullivan gives you the facts that are difficult to find in other places. There is no fluff here. I would recommend this to an speaker and well as to those considering entering the speaking business.

Great Money-Making Ideas for Experts
As a publisher, I love it when authors give presentations to promote their books. Vickie gives a lot of practical, "try this tomorrow" tactics that can boost sales after every speech. It's obvious that she knows her stuff -- this material is fresh, not the basic information you hear elsewhere. The Web-based
material also has a lot of details too. Any one who speaks to promote their product or services could benefit from this information.

What a gem!
When you listen to these tapes, you will feel as if Vickie is sitting right there with you- be it in your car or getting some coffee together. You take away usable action-steps that immediately impact your bottom line. After using Vickie's methods, my speaking business at least doubled itself.

My Literary Cat
My cat tried to eat the book. Does this signal a voracious literary appetite?

Uh oh.....
My dumb cat just tested 40 points higher than my IQ. Now what do I do?

I have dumb cats
This book was very interesting, but if you have an older, spoiled kitty, paid previously to just lay around, don't expect a lot. I enjoyed the book, but unfortunately I found that my cats' artistic abilities are limited to NOT looking at the pictures.
