a moving account of motherhood
Susan Cheever is unafraid to share her failings, her strengths, and her almost frightening love for her children. Her story is deeply personal, and yet, it shines a light on the double-edged sword all mothers are eventually nicked (and often cut) by -- devotion and rage towards one's children, the great humor and tragedy of parenting, feelings of wisdom and of utter bewilderment. A beautiful, funny book, and a tribute to the two children who have helped her grow up.

As Fabulous As She Could Be
This is Susan Cheever at her eloquent, incisive, sweet-rhythmed best. She writes that her children are the center of her world. Lucky children. And lucky us to be the recipients of her loving, hilarious, honest report back to the outer reaches.

Susan Cheever is a great writer and a wonderful parent!!
"Real me" is my favorite of all the chapters but all of them are fantastic!!! Cheever has shown us the funny side of parenting, this is not a "boring how-to-guide" but more sharing of cheever's experence, strenght and hope!!!! Moving, funny, witty and revealing!!!!

A VERY HELPFUL BOOK!
This book really helped me understand the aging process, hold onto my empathy and compassion, balance my life better (I was starting to lose myself), and gave me a sense of calm because I have the knowledge of how to manage it all so much better. You'll gain so much insight from this book. My entire family noticed the difference in my attitude after I read it, calmed me down so much and gave me specifics of how to cope. "Elder Rage" is the other book I recommend for coping with aging parents, particularly if you have one who is real difficult to manage.

As Parents Age
Book is aimed at creating an understanding of the psychological impact to aging parent and family unit. Provides insight into how the family must act together and what pitfalls to avoid. Works on preserving the dignity of the parent, and finding ways to help the parent and still allow family members to maintain lives of their own.

A "must read" for every adult child with aging parents.
This book should be read by every adult child with a healthy parent over seventy. How do you know when a parent needs help? When it's time for a nursing home, how do you find a quality facility? Joseph Ilardo provides all of the guidance needed to help parents through the stages of needing assistance at home, moving into an institution , and preparing for the end of life. Beyond the specific practical advice, the book explains the psychological processes involved for the aging parent and for the adult child. I have just assisted my parents with moving my ailing father to a nursing home. As a result of my using this book, my father made the transition to a quality facility with good will, and the entire family was involved in a positive, supportive fashion.

Great musical biography
This is a terrific show-biz bio that focuses on Berlin's career and tells enough about his personal life to satisfy those of us who remember how complex he was. There are many details of his projects on Broadway and in Hollywood, his publishing company, his early career as a singing waiter, and his tormented retirement. Anyone who likes the kind of anecdotes Moss Hart recounts in "Act One," anyone who is interested in the process of putting on shows and developing movies, will be fascinated by this. The book overflows with the larger-than-life personalities you expect from show business, and there are choice revelations (to me, at least), like his first encounter with George Gershwin, who as a very young man wanted to be Berlin's musical secretary but was rejected for being too talented (i.e., threatening).

The psychology (or psychosis?) of Berlin's genius is presented in a straightforward, non-babbling way. His complexity comes through in his ambivalence towards colleagues, with examples of generosity (an anecdote about the young Burton Lane), avuncularity (Harold Arlen), and rivalry (Richard Rodgers), all contrasted with the almost comical hostility he showed towards some "civilians," especially the scholarly types ("f***ing longhairs") who wanted to dissect him late in his career. His most famous paradox -- the fact that without being able to read music or play an instrument well or even sing decently, he was able to create works of matchless intricacy and depth -- is discussed thoroughly, although it will forever remain mysterious.

There are two dimensions I would like to have seen more fully explored. First, his relations with his original family are almost non-existent after his childhood. While this must be a reflection of reality, I was left curious about what went on between him and his sisters, nephews, and nieces. It's obvious that a major part of his assimilation was to reject all vestiges of his childhood, but it would have been nice to have more detail about encounters with those inconvenient relations. One of the few stories Bergreen includes -- about a sister dying of cancer -- is so painful that maybe he couldn't bring himself to pile on more.

Another aspect that could have been more developed was Berlin's technique. Although no one will ever be able to explain exactly why he's the greatest American songwriter, I would have liked more analysis about how he was able to achieve his unique combination of simplicity and sophistication. There is a total absence of musical examples, which might have two reasons: that publishers of musical bios tell their authors to leave notation out the same way authors of popular science books are prohibited from using equations, or that Berlin's estate forbids the quoting of even the smallest snippets of his songs. Or maybe the author isn't as much of a "longhair" as he seems to be from the precision and insight of his observations.

But even though I would have enjoyed reading more of the above, the book is totally splendid as is. The best compliment I can think of is that it does justice to one of the great artists of the 20th century.

A WELL RESEARCHED BIOGRAPHY
LAURENCE BERGREEN has done a terrific job in all departments. When you finish the book, you have a good idea of who IRVING BERLIN was, and what a life he had from singing waiter to AMERICAN's first great composer with JEROME KERN. Anyone interested in the story of AMERICAN music should read that book.

A Wonderful Book About A Great American
I enjoyed Bergreen's book about Irving Berlin as I did his book on Al Capone. To think that all these great songs came from one man simply boggles the mind.

A good book for those who are new to ascension
I have read the book and I have to admit that I haven't encountered anything I didn't know previously. However, I would still recommend it to people who are new to this concept. For those who have worked earnestly with A Course in Miracles, or have read and practiced the principles in the books Life and Teachings of the Masters of the Far East by Baird T. Spalding, Door of Everything by Ruby Nelson, or the books by Annalee Skarin, I don't think they will find anything new. The progress in this as in any other practice lies, of course, in daily practice and application of the principles to everyday life. To those who have read this book, I highly recommend to read the other books I mentioned, and some others such as Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda, God I AM by Peter Erbe and The Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman.

Easy listening for your soul
This is a great book and to have it on audio cassette is incredible. I listen to it in my car and it's nice. It explains the mechanics Ascension in a straight forward easy way--Easy Listening For the Soul.

A book that can change your life!
Reading "Ascension" can be a very pleasurable experience to anyone interested in a new way of looking at their life, and at the stress that they have right now. But it is not enough to just read it, one must decide that there really is a way to change things. Change attitudes, beliefs, ways of looking at the world around them, by realizing that there really is a way to contact our inner Selves, and we hold the methods right in our hands, if we only care to use them. A great book for showing us that we can become on the outside what we have always been on the inside. This is a five star book for anyone that really wants it enough to do whatever is required.

Fred Lieb, who covered his first ballgame in 1911, continued on to prowl pressboxes across the land for nearly seven decades. His Baseball as I Have Known It, is aptly titled; over a long and distinguished career, he knew just about everyone worth knowing in the game, and saw pretty much everything worth seeing. His recollections of the 1919 Black Sox, the Yankee dynasties of the '20s and '30s, and his affectionate reminiscences of Christy Mathewson and Lou Gehrig make Baseball as I Have Known It particularly worth knowing, too.

Excellent read for fans of all ages
I really enjoyed reading this. Fred Lieb does a remarkable job covering the major events that occured in baseball during his career in baseball as a writer(1911-1975). It begins with him as a young sports writer covering the 1911-1912 World Series witnessing players like Christy Mathewson, Homerun Baker and Fred Snodgrass. He then dedicates individual chapters talking about his relationship with Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Lou Gherig, Pete Alexander and Christy Mathewson and his opinion on their place in baseball history. He talks about the effect the 1919 World Series fix had on baseball and how Landis was the games savior as he calls him. He also has chapters on some of his favorite mangers that he covered including Connie Mack, Casey Stengel and Joe McCarthy. He concludes this excellent book by comparing and contrasting how the game has changed since his youth(1890s to early 1900s) to today(mid 1970s at time of writing) then picking his all-time teams in 25 year spans from 1876-1975. Any baseball fan with an interest in the games history should definately pick this book up.

Fred Lieb is A True Hall of Famer
Fred Lieb knew the players he talks about personally. Anything written by Fred Lieb about baseball is coming from a true authority on the subject. Baseball has a history unlike any other sport. No other sport can touch it, and in reading about it from Fred Lieb you are getting it from a true master. Do yourself a favor. Buy the book.

Fred Lieb was telling what he saw and felt.
Because Fred Lieb saw so many old time players and told about them in such an interesting way. I also thould he was very fair in his comparing of the players abilities.

Being Present in the Darkness: Depression as an Opportunity for Self-Discovery

Exceptional
I spent most of my life in the numbing fog of depression. Unless you've experienced the horrors of chronic depression you have no idea how debilitating it is. There were times when I actually got to the point where I thought, "That's enough. I can't do this anymore," and wished I would get hit by a bus to save my family the heartache and embarrassment of having a suicide in the family. Thankfully I was able to stick it out. I learned to turn inward and rely on the strength that was part of me. There were people who helped me do this. And there was this book. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is depressed and is ready to kick the habit. It's not a quick fix, there are no quick fixes. All I can say is that it helped me. Maybe it could help you.

Wow! She wastes no time helping you see the light
and finding your way out of darkness. Deeply affecting and calming these tapes proved of immediate value to me. Cheri's simple sounding, but incredibly powerful message of self-discovery and compassion while in the midst of this darkness called depression is a must-have. Different from other books on the topic, Cheri Huber's approach offers tools for immediate change. Powerful Stuff.

Zen in disguise
See my review of the book. The audio version of the book is very good, as well

Bible as Literature

Excellent
The Hebrew and Christian Scriptures have come to mean many different things for many different people. Regardless of how one may finally understand the place of the Scriptures in religion and faith, the many-varied writings contained therein are still, by their very nature, works of literature: composed by specific people in specific times, who had specific assumptions, understandings, purposes, and audiences in mind. Understanding these specifics is a step in reading these Scriptures that no reader can afford to neglect, and it is to this end that this volume is directed.

Two words that may prove helpful in describing this volume are "unbiased" and "objective," in every positive sense of both of these terms. The trio of authors (two of whom are emeritus professors of English) have accomplished a remarkable feat in approaching the Bible on its own terms as a composite literary work. Appropriately, the volume includes surveys of the major literary traditions represented in the Scriptures: Torah, prophets, the wisdom tradition, apocalyptic literature, gospels, letters/epistles, etc. Interestingly enough, however, these brief yet erudite surveys do not comprise the majority of the final content of the book. Rather, the authors have devoted much needed attention to some of the oft-neglected history and traditions surrounding these works, i.e., canonicity, conventional ANE literary techniques, historiographical issues, Palestinian geography, and apocrypha and pseudepigrapha. Knowledge of such information is all but imperative in attempts to read the Scriptures "correctly," as much as such a thing can be done.

Well strucutred, well researched, well informed, and simply well done, this volume is an invaluable companion text to the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures, and it moves the reader closer to answering the all-important question of "How are these texts meant to be read?" A wonderful, comprehensive, and remarkably objective survey of the literature that comprises the collected Hebrew and Christian Scriptures.

Excellent, Non-Sectarian Look at the Bible.
I think that this book is wonderful! I am a student of Dr. Anthony York's and we have utilized this book in our classes. The Bible As Literature discusses the Bible in a manner that helps the reader actually read what is/was written without all the religious jargon. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is curious about "The Bible" or to anyone who thinks they "really" know what the Bible states.

A liberal approach to the Bible
It is difficult to separate the literary and religious aspects of the Bible, but the authors' focus is on the book "as literature" and in the space of 357 pages (in my copy of the 4th edition - 432 according to Amazon.com), they cover literary forms and strategies, historical and geographic settings, the major components of the Old and New Testaments and the Apocrypha and Pseudoepigrapha, and issues concerning the text and its translation. A valuable final chapter considers the religious use and interpretation of the Bible. Although the book is concise, it manages in its 18 chapters and 3 appendices to be comprehensive and is consistently readable. I find the sensible, scientific approach credible and while it frequently causes me to reflect on my religious beliefs, they are not seriously undermined by this liberal approach. I do not know of a better introduction to the Bible.

As I Am: Young African American Women in a Critical Age
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (May, 1999)
Authors: Julian C. R. Okwu and Julian C. R. Okwa

As I Am is Julian C.R. Okwu's companion book to Face Forward (which focused on young African American males "in a critical age"). For As I Am, Okwu selected and interviewed 36 women with vastly different experiences and backgrounds to illustrate the complexity of black women's experiences in America. The civil rights era has come and gone, but battles are still being waged. From the superintendent at a construction company who has to deal with snide sexist remarks to the veterinarian who is warned by a dog's owner, "I don't know how she is with black people," struggles for equality in the workplace, on university campuses, and throughout our culture continue. Although hardships and obstacles are shared, As I Am reflects the courage and strength of some inspiring and motivating women. Young women in their late teens to early 30s reflect on what it means to be, just to pick some examples, a mixed-race writer, a cancer survivor, a missionary, a doctor, an engineer, or a classical pianist; introspective examinations of the soul reveal how these women triumph in their day-to-day racist and sexist encounters. The intimate chapters and gorgeous duotone photographs of As I Am may leave readers anxiously waiting for one of these spirited women to pen her autobiography. --Atiya Taylor

interesting, motivatin, informative
This book is worth the paper it is written on, the photographs are beautiful, the words are rich, and the stories offer various views of what its like to be a young black woman in the 90's. If you have a few hours to expand your mind, then this book will assist you.

Inspiring for all, not just African-American women.
This is a wonderful book. Okwa focuses on the narratives of young African-American women who have taken their passion to heart and made successful careers and important contributions to society. A highlight of this text is that it not only has amazing photographs anchoring these women within the contexts they work and live in, but also highlights their struggles, especially academic and personal, along the way.

This book is also helpful for people agonizing over career choices. For every person who has wanted to major in Women's Studies or History but wondered what to do with it--here are examples of powerful people who take the study of the humanities and arts to exciting new places, from television producing, to free-lance photography, to well-respected academia.

This book also has a companion one---"Face Forward." This other volume examines African-American men, who, as a whole, are also facing a critical time in American society.

Get both---buy Both, and draw strength and power from those who have struggled before you. Okwa is a master photographer and lets the compelling narratives of these women shine. We all should do the same.

Wonderful mini-biographies of amazing young Black women
I finally have found a book that is true to life and modern concerning the plight and challenges of young Black women. It is a truly magnificent collection. The women with the pages fulfill the purpose of motivating and inspiring others. Each women in this book is an example of hope. As I was reading the book, I was emotionally struck by the uniqueness of their lives yet many other women, I know, can relate to their experiences.

Okwu seems to have the gift of finding beautiful people with outstanding lives. The photo shots were magnificent and added a particularly captivating life to the words.

Thanks again for a true to life teaching book of amazing stories. One may use their examples of coping and harvesting energy for development of their own positive future. Truly a gift to have to read or give to someone who you love.

As Iron Sharpens Iron Cassette

The Marvel of Mentoring
I have yet to be disappointed with anything written by Howard Hendricks. In this book, he does a superb job of presenting the tremendous worth and transforming power of a mentoring relationship between two men. While these principles would also apply to a woman-to-woman relationship, Hendricks is writing to provide support for the Christian men's movement "Promise Keepers."

There are two sections to this work: how to find a mentor, and how to be a mentor. Hendricks emphasizes there are many more men seeking mentors than there are men who are willing to be mentors. He discourages actually using the title of "mentor" when establishing such a supportive relationship, for fear it will intimate one of the parties. Instead, he promotes referring to the interaction as what would occur between two friends. Hendricks also describes how to spot a mentor or a protégé, then how to avoid common pitfalls of such an arrangement.

For anyone seeking to learn from a respected male friend, or for someone seeking to invest his life-lessons of experience in a younger man, this book is simply invaluable.

Proverb of Solomon Rings True:
Prov 27:17
17 As iron sharpens iron,
So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend
NKJV

Here, we have the example of keeping our friends in the light of God and this book elaborates on it. Discipleship is the key to good fruit in our life.
I am sure many of you know discipleship from the New Testament but do you realize it is as old as Time? God wanted to disciple Adam and Eve and in return, they would disciple the World. This book relates specifically to the "Men" doing the discipling.
I was pleased to see how much my life and Ministry changed after reading this book and listening to the voice of the Spirit of Truth. If you are a man in need of a closer walk, pick up a copy of this book and see if you too will be changed.

Overall, I would recommend this book to other men of God.

As you all know, your first reading assignment was to self-select a mentoring book from Amazon.com. You can thread your postings from here.

It will be very helpful to the class if you'd include the following: 1. Author and Name of the Book 2. Three Major Important Points emphasized by the book. 3. Why you liked the book. 4. Why you didn't like the book. 5. Overall assessment of the book.

QUESTION #1: Howard and William Hendricks (Father and Son Team) Building Character in a Mentoring Relationship: As Iron Sharpens Iron - 1995 (270 pages)

QUESTION #2: This book is addressed specifically toward men and is broken in 2 major parts with a Mentoring Action Plan located in the back of the book. Its release was scheduled to coincide with the 1995 schedule of the national Promise Keepers conferences.

Part 1 is for men who want to be mentored.

This part helps the reader to understand what character traits he should look for when trying to find a mentor: someone who is real, creative, and captures your heart. The book focuses on the mentoring that leads to spiritual maturity with numerous analogies and examples of what character traits a man needs to nature our souls. Hence the title which is derived from the Bible: "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens the other." (Proverbs 27:!7)

It identifies on p.63 "Ten Marks of a Mentor" The ideal mentor is a person who... 1. Seems to have what you personally need. 2. Cultivates relationships. 3. Is willing to take a chance on you. 4. Is respected by other Christians. 5. Has a network of resources. 6. Is consulted by others. 7. Both talks and listens. 8. Is consistent in his lifestyle. 9. Is able to diagnose your needs. 10.Is concerned with your interests.

This part of the book explains the benefits of having a mentor: helps you reach your goals and provides a role model. Where to find a mentor: at work, at college, or your church. How to cultivate a mentor relationship. The differences between a formal and informal mentoring relationship. The expectations both realistic and unrealistic. And taking personal responsibility for growing a mentoring relationship.

Part 2 is for men who are willing to serve as mentors.

This part of the book cites several examples of Biblical men (Paul and Barnabas) who felt inadequate about leadership, yet were very influential to the lives of numerous men. It explains the benefits of being a mentor: relationships, personal growth, and making a difference in the lives of other men. The roles of a mentor are clearly explained and "analogized" with several examples. On page 159 the book defines the mentoring relationship by using these practical keys to serve his protégé.

A Mentor... - is a source of information - provides wisdom (as guided by the Bible) - promotes specific skills and effective behaviors - provides feedback - coaches - is a sounding board - is someone to turn to - helps devise plans - nurtures curiosity

Then this part of the text goes on to state how to find a protégé, what to look for, and how to properly cultivate the mentoring relationship.

The Mentoring Action Plan found in the third section of the book is designed as a workbook to help develop Mentor / Protégé relationships in a thoughtful and practical manner. QUESTION #3:

I enjoyed the many practical examples presented in this book. It is straightforward, easy to read, and can be life changing. It is one of those books that you want to go back and reread for insight and direction.

QUESTION #4:

This book is targeted toward a very specific audience. As a man and a Christian, I had no complaints with this book. However, if I was neither this book probably would not be very useful or convincing to me.

QUESTION #5: Overall, I would recommend this book to other men who are wondering how to create meaningful, Godly relationships with other men.

The Best Music Bio I've Read!
I've been in love with this woman and her music ever since I saw The Ronettes live at The Brooklyn Fox Theatre in 1964. I was only 15 years old at the time. If you love Ronnie Spector as much as I do, then do yourself a favor and buy this book. It isn't only about music. It is about courage, and the ability to overcome barriers. Very inspirational. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Worth 10 Stars-Required Reading for Ronnie Spector Fans!
This book is even more timely to read now that Ronnie's ex-hubby Phil Spector was arrested the other day for the murder of a woman in his house. It gives great insight not only into Ronnie's life story and rise to stardom but also into Phil's personality and temperament. While there is absolutely no doubt of Phil's musical genius, the man was(and possibly still is)mentally unstable(he claims to be bipolar and does not like to take his meds). I first bought and read this book when it first came out years ago but it is still a great read, one of the very best rock-bios around. It is also a great companion piece to Darlene Love's autobiography. If you are a fan of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, both books are essential reading. Very highly recommended.

WOW: RONNIE AT LAST!
For Ronnie Spector fans everywhere, this book has it all. Her early days in New York City, the beginning of the Ronettes, their spectacular number 1 hit BE MY BABY, her nightmare of booze and obsession while married to that creep Phil Spector, and her triumphant return to her first love of music and singing. If you want a fascinating look at the girl groups in Rock and Roll history, then you want to read this book. She writes in a down-to-earth way that makes you feel like a good friend is telling you a heart-wrenching story of pain and loss, of fear and courage. Good going, Ronnie! We love you.
