Klein's Student
I have been so lucky to have had Dr. Klein as an Organic Chem prof at Johns Hopkins. His lectures and his book made it easy to gain the tools needed to be sucessful in orgo.

Save yourself some trouble, buy this book!
Put simply, this book is amazing. Klein presents clear explanations of the main concepts of organic chemistry; he has a gift for reducing complicated concepts into plain language. This book offers helpful hints and patterns for things like resonance and chair conformations that you probably won't find in your textbook. For example, I found that my textbook would basically say "here's what resonance is, now draw some resonance structures" and I was left struggling to find a systematic way of drawing them. Klein's book shows patterns to look for when you're drawing resonance strucures so it takes less time. This book will prevent some headaches.

best basic organic book ever
I ordered this book in the during the second semester of Organic chemistry I am enrolled in and only wished I had ordered it earlier. It gets down to the very basics of Organic such a resonance forms and pushing electrons and explains it simply and clearly. It is still a help for me, but would have been extremely helpful in the beginning. It is a very quick read which is surprising for anything related to organic and you should be able to read a chapter a night easily. I wish they could make this book a required book for organic college courses as I have found it much more helpful than the texts I am given for class. It also has brief exercises throughout each chapter and the exercises are enough to help you learn the concepts without them getting tedious.
If you are trying to get through Organic, it will be the best 25 buck you ever spent, and I can guarantee you will learn something from this book.

In Baseball's Great Experiment: Jackie Robinson and His Legacy and the follow-up Jackie Robinson Reader, Jules Tygiel focused his historian's eye on what was arguably baseball's most stunning single event. Dissecting it from every angle, he followed its consequences through the weft of the national fabric in a pair of consummate, readable, and marvelously entertaining books that painted an arresting portrait of a remarkable man and his remarkable ordeal. In Past Time Tygiel widens his focus to turn his considerable narrative and interpretive skills loose on the broader tapestry of the game itself. The result is a superb collection of essays on American history filtered through the national pastime's lens. "If there is a unifying theme"--and there certainly is--"it is that while the game of baseball itself has changed minimally since its origins, the context and format in which Americans have absorbed and appreciated the game have dramatically shifted."

Drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of the game, Tygiel uses the game as his doorway for entry into--and airing out--several rooms of the American past. Though the nine essays that make up Past Time reflect the game's nine innings and are presented chronologically, they are each entities unto themselves and can be read in any order. Rarely stepping onto the playing field, they avoid the mushiness and rhapsodizing that baseball tends to evoke. Instead, they take provocative looks at the often overlooked--like why statistics hold the game together, and why holding the game together was crucial to an America emerging from the Civil War--and fresh looks at old warhorses like baseball and the Depression era, baseball and civil rights, and baseball and America's post-World War II geographical shift. The final "inning" examines such recent obsessions as rotisserie leagues and fantasy camps, and the chapter on Bobby Thompson's famed home run and how the ways we would experience the game in the early years of the Cold War would change is thoroughly absorbing. But, then, so is the rest of Past Time. It has you wishing for extra "innings." --Jeff Silverman

Fascinating
What a treat! Tygiel presents nine loosely-connected essays on various aspects of baseball and their interrelation with other aspects of American history and social change. With a historian's eye for detail and mind for interpretation, each chapter presents gems of insight that even serious students of baseball history will find intriguing. Tygiel's writing style, as befits a professor of history, is intelligent, literate, and persuasive, but never dry. The "short-story" format works well, and provides opportunity for reflection--although readers may have a hard time not just moving on to the next "inning." Reflecting Tygiel's academic background, the essays are impeccably researched and lavishly footnoted, with many primary sources cited. This book is a must for fans of baseball, and for fans of US history--for fans of both, buy the hardback, and reserve a place of honor for it on your bookshelf. You'll want to read it over again, for this book's only major drawback is the lack of extra innings.

provocative, enjoyable synthesis of baseball and history
When Professory Jules Tygiel presented his authoritative analysis of Jackie Robinson in "Baseball's Great Experiment," he gave notice that writing about baseball could not only reflect history but provide lovers of the "national game" a sense of how baseball reflected and influenced the society in which they live. His most recent effort, "Past Time," is a splendid integration of baseball and the dominant social and economic themes resonating around and through the sport. Written in nine chapters, each representing an inning/era in baseball's past, Professor Tygiel explores numerous athletic and historical themes in a beautifully written and thoroughly researched volume. It belongs not only on shelves of those, like me, who love the sport, but those, like me, who believe that imaginative and provocative histories can help assist all of us in understanding who we are and how we became the way we are.

Readers could enjoy this volume by selecting any one of the chapters; although the work is presented chronologically, Professor Tygiel offers each "inning" as its own entity. The meticulous research that entered into his writing (the book has some twenty pages of footnotes) weaves seamlessly into truly graceful writing. As he would say of DiMaggio, "he makes it look easy." There are trenchant observations on baseball as business, on the place of a ballclub in a city's self-definition and how the media has enhanced and democratized the sport.

I especially enjoyed his talented analysis of the impact of media on the sport. From print journalism, which helped create fans to the advent of visual media (ably noted as "new ways of knowing") to the impact of electronic dissemination of information, baseball has enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with mass communication. I was most impressed with his description of Henry Chadwick, whose devotion to the scientific and reform ideas he saw as essential to baseball's success, the father of baseball statistics. Readers will no doubt delight remembering Chadwick's invention of the stories "batting average" when they consider the impact of Bill James' type of information in their modern sensibilities.

There are nuggets of unmitigated delight here as well. Tygiel wonderously describes Babe Ruth becoming mute during an early radio interview and having his voice replaced by the moderator; nobody knew the difference and many commented on how well Ruth spoke. Then, Tygiel gives an absolutely fascinating commentary on Russ Hodges' famous "The Giants win the pennant" call after Bobby Thompson hit his "shot heard 'round the world." Not only that, he provides insight into how a prescient statistic analyst, Dodger employee Allan Roth, sadly predicted the very homerun which upset his beloved team.

Written with a love of the sport, a respect for the glorious cadences of the human voice and a knowledge of the political, economic and social interaction of sport and society, "Past Time" will emerge as one of the essential works on baseball every fan of the game and of the country will want to own.

The Best
I probably grew up in "the middle" of baseball history avidly watching "my" Giants at the Polo Grounds and on channel 11 out of New York. In those days the Dodgers and Giants played each other 22 times a season and they were some of the best baseball wars imaginable.

Jules Tygiel maticulously and fascinatingly brings the history of baseball alive from its' beginnings up to "THE" homerun hit by Bobby Thompson in l951. Unlike other authors, however, he intigrates the progress of baseball with its intersection and influence on the progress of society. It is an unforgettable history lesson written in a crisp fashion that allows easy reading.

The last third of the book traces the dramatic changes in professional baseball that brings us the game we know today where arch rivals play a maximum of eight to ten games per year against each other and players continually rotate from team to team seeking the best dollar.

Whether you enjoy today's game as well the past where there were two leagues of eight teams each is irrelevent. Baseball, in the form it is played in 2000,is establishing permanentcy and likely to change little save for further expansion. Jules Tygiel's "Past Time" lets us understand the how and why the changes in the past fifty years have occurred. Like it or not - it sure is nice to know!

Finally, one of the best baseball books I have ever read.

Great book! I bought it almost 10 years ago and still use it
This is great book. I bought it almost 10 years ago when I was a "intermediate lerner" and I still use it to refresh my memory from time to time.
It has very clear examples and explanations.
You may read it back to back, you may also jump directly to the topic of interest, because each section is self contained.
It is not burdened by contrived stories about improbable characters running through other intermediate books. This is a book of rules; it goes directly to the point and gives one or two lines long, self-contained examples.
If you are a very advanced lerner you may need to supplement this book, but haven't found another book that does a job as good as this one at a more advanced level. So now, I mainly refer to this book, and in the rare occasions I don't find my answer there I usually have to scavenge dozens of books to find the answer I am looking for

If you have not discovered your favourite grammar book ...
I was first recommended this book by my English teacher when I was in high school. I read it through and felt I got a pretty good idea about English grammar and English usage in general. It was 15 years ago. Since then I completed my undergraduate and graduate degrees in institutions where English was the language of instruction, and continue using English on work. Often when I see grammar mistakes in writing or speaking, I realise that it was explained in this book and feel greatful what it taught me. I have read many other grammar books but whenever I am not sure, I still go back to this book. My teacher who recommended me this book said exactly the same thing. So I strongly recommend this book for foundation and referrence for English grammar, for those who have not found grammar book they are satisfied with.

All you will ever need to know about english Grammar
I was tired about reading one English grammar book after the other and founding something new in each one. Finally I found this book that has every single grammar rule. I strongly recommended it if you really want to master English grammar.

A cracking great sea read
I would have loved this book regardless of where it was set, but the fact that it takes place in and around the area where I grew up made it even more special for me. Rich and believable characters, settings, and battles make for an exciting and compelling read.

The only detraction from an otherwise excellent book: it could have used a bit more (or maybe less?) editing. While Fender's writing is rich and excellent, it suffers from occasional punctuation errors in some places and from garbled phrasing that could have easily been cleared up in others.

That's just nitpicking, however. I recommend this book very highly and am looking forward to the rest of the series.

A Worthy Successor to Patrick O'Bryan
In his first book of what hopefully will be a long series, James Fender has shown promise of being a timely and worthy successor to Patrick O'Brian. "The Private Revolution of Geoffrey Frost" builds gradually into a fascinating and entertaining account of the stirring rescue of American prisoners held under brutal conditions at an obscure port in Nova Scotia. Like O'Brian, his story is based on real events, but from an American perspective and during the Revolutionary War period. I can't wait until the next volume of the series appears.

An exciting new series.
After Hornblower and the O'Brian books, it's great to read a series from the American point of view. The hero, Geoffrey Frost, is suitably larger-than-life, but still an interesting character with doubts and worries. The author certainly seems to possess the requisite command of naval lore, and he keeps the action moving at a brisk and exciting pace. A wonderful balance of seafaring adventure and historical detail.

Professors As Writers

ALL writers (or potential writers) should read this book!
This book is fantastic. Just when I thought I'd read it all, I stumbled across this book while surfing the Internet. It is by far the best book I've ever come across to help someone overcome procrastination or any other writing "problem."

The first chapter is a bit overly academic in tone, but the rest is down-to-earth. He does an exceptional job discussing free-writing and clustering; and then he goes on to give further advice regarding how to manage your social and environmental situation to encourage your productivity. His advice works very well -- and it is not just for academic writers.

Essential for struggling academic writers
This is one of the best books out there for academics who need help getting themselves to write. I'm a clinical psychologist who coaches faculty, post-docs and grad students, and this is one of the first books I recommend. Almost all of Boice's prolific body of work is useful - and his suggestions, both in books and journal articles, are backed up by research - this makes his contributions unique in the genre of self-help books for academics.

Advice that really works
Face it, all of us academics would like to think that someday a muse will descend upon us and infuse us with the capability to write the great work in our field without self-doubt, procrastination, etc. Boice shows empirical evidence that demonstrates these hopes are in vain (which is no big surprise to anyone), but even better, he provides the solution: writing is like physical exercise--the more you do it, the easier and more pleasant it becomes--if you write a little bit every day, even if you think it's pointless, at the end of a six month period, you will have 150 pages of writing to edit. It makes sense and it works. He even talks about reasons that people want to resist this truth, and how to trick yourself out of your writer's block. Grad students especially should benefit from the strategies he suggests.

Queen: As It Began

Queen Rule The World!
The complete and virtually unabridged biography of the greatest band of all time is a must-have for any fan. It details the lifes of Freddie, Brian, John and Roger from their respective births, and leaves little out (apart from the malicious gossip that so frequently found in the tabloid papers about them).

The book is written by Jacky Smith (nee Gunn), the manageress of the Offical International Queen Fan Club (which is now the longesy running fan club of all time) and Jim Jenkins, a long time fan who was at most of the concerts Queen ever gave, so the authority from both people is a good one. You cane expect everything in the book to be completetly factual, and absolutley respectful to Queen and their families.

A magnificent piece of work
Since everyone else has given this book such good reviews i cant help doing the same, this book really explain the things worth to know about the legendarious rock band Queen. From their very first song and how Brian with his father built his very special guitar to the sad end for Freddie. A whole lot of pictures and things we fanatics really like. Just great book!

Queen Still Rocks
If you are a Queen 'FANATIC", or just a newbie looking into a possible interest in the band Queen, this book is for you. From the very beginning we see each band member grow up and come together. We see how this great enigma became, and how so tragically it ended. I have read this book more than 5 times, and plan to read it some more. Kudos to Jackie!!

Self-proclaimed Pakistani podiatrist Little Debbie Ducommun is the venerable Miss Universe of rats and rat health. Which is probably why she's so damn smart. Her sensuous, 192-page magnum opus, Rats: Complete Care Guide, reads like a beastiality-friendly kama sutra, and yet Ms. Ducommun still finds room to serve up a habitrail full of simple, mouth-watering culinary tips (including an Atkins-approved, delectable, rodent dropping soup starvation diet for the rat infested soul) to inspire and satiate a generation of homeless-couture hopheads. First editions of this book also include a full-color, fine art, uncensored, Playboy-style, nip-n-tucked, spread-eagled centerfold! Thank you for this PETA-approved, Disney-inspired book! I can't wait for the noxious sequel!

Finally, a rat book with correct information
Well-written, easy to understand and containing up to date, correct rat care information.

Debbie Ducommun is a blessing to anyone who owns pet rats! With a long history of experience with rats, as a veterinary technician, pet store manager, and with a degree in animal behavior, the author is highly qualified to advise pet rat owners, from the neophyte to more experienced persons such as myself ( I am a licensed vet technician). The book is written in an organized, easily understood manner. The photos are superb, and there are literally photos for nearly every page of text. Subject matter spans a broad range of topics including behavior, training, medical tips, breeds, showing and much more. I have nearly every informational rat book in existence, and this book tops them all. Thank you Debbie Ducommun!

It doesn't matter if you never go to San Francisco -- buy this book just for the sheer joy of reading it. Bonnie Wach has real opinions and does not dish out the usual everything-is-great travel-guide drivel. Her writing sparkles with personality, wit and humor. All the particulars for the places she writes about are listed in the margins, making the information easy to find when you're looking for it. If you have any interest in San Francisco or travel books in general, buy this book.

Great Guide, Great Gift
All I can say is that not only have I bought a copy, but I have given three away as gifts. It is great guide for anyone visiting San Francisco or for anyone hosting visitors.

Fresh, innovative and useful approach to seeing San Francisc
As a San Franciscan, this book is the perfect gift and/or inspiration to entertain friends, family or even yourself.

The author's approach orients the reader and eliminates the clutter of the average guide book. The book also has a nice balance between indoor and outdoor activities that you will be tempted to do over and over.

This is the perfect book for those looking for both the obvious and the obscure in San Francisco.

an overall pleasurable read
The Oz Factors is a pretty good book. The author did a good job for not being well educated. He uses The Wizard of Oz story as a springboard for explaining his philosophy on everything. I think that anyone would enjoy the book. It may make a few people on the extremes (i.e. hard core liberal and conservative people)nervous.

Learn How To Think For Yourself
"The Oz Factors" pulls back the curtain of misinformation and deceit carefully concealing the vested interests of the "great and powerful" of western civilization. What you have been taught about western history, science, archaeology and spirituality have been twisted, distorted and concealed from view to serve the self-serving lies and fears of wizards and witches.
Learn how to think for yourself. You don't have to be the victim of the "oz factors" any longer. Read this book.

What makes a book good?
You probably think it's a good thing to question assumptions. Well if a book helps to to discover assumptions that you forgot you were assuming, you might call that a revelation. I for one enjoy a good revelation. This book is full of them, and wasn't that the real story of the Wizard of OZ? I knew there was something about that movie.....

Deep...Perceptive...Insightful! I loved it all!!!
In her highly cerebral style, Eakins once again explores the events of all ages that bear so heavily on our culture. We need to know what has been and what will be if we are to enter the next millenium with confidence. She caters to this fundamental need magnificantly!!!

Highly recommended for spiritual seekers
This book is a powerful journey through time and space; an exploration of Truth and Spirit that takes the reader through history and into the future. The writing is deeply thought-provoking. So many books of this genre can be pretty mindless pap, but not this one. A Spiritual journey is full of joy, terror, pain and pleasure -- and so is this book. If you are looking for an in depth exploration of alternative spirituality, this book is highly recommended by me.

Inspiring!!!!!
