The Beatles As Musicians: The Quarry Men Through Rubber Soul

Dense, but wonderful.
Yes, this book is very dense and technical, I am not a musician and was a bit lost at times, however, the author structures the book in such a way that you can skim or skip what is over your head (a lot for me) and still get something out of this book.

For me, one of the most important and rare things about this book is the way the author does not fall into the John vs. Paul biases like so many others who have written on this topic. He gives both men the written ananlysis and technical break down of their work they deserve and does not short change Paul in favor of John. This is appreciated as I believe it gives the best description of how the songwriting evolved through the talents of both men.

He also gives the same critical analysis of George Harrison's songs, this is rare indeed.

For these reasons I highly recommend the book for serious Beatle fans.

I am already burning through the second book.

Excellent Beatle book but...
First, let me make it clear that I really like this book (and its companion volume.) It's pretty difficult to write anything about the Beatles anymore that hasn't been written about ad nauseum already, but both of these books contain a great deal of fresh and intelligent information and insight on the Beatles's music. That said, I have a feeling that a lot of folks looking for new Beatles literature just aren't going to particularly enjoy The Beatles As Musicians. I'm a musician, but at times as I was reading this material I felt as though I might as well have been reading Latin simply because Mr. Everett is often very technical and rather esoteric in his discussions. In some ways (and Mr. Everett admittedly touches on this issue) these books seem somehow to fly in the face of what makes rock music so great in the first place...emotion, borderline chaos, an underlying sense of danger and rebellion, limited musicianship that somehow leads to innovation, chance, improvisation, etc etc. Still, as I noted, I enjoyed these books a great deal even when I didn't have the slightest idea what the author was writing about. But if you're not a musician or you are one who is largely self-taught and as technically stupid as I am, I wonder how much you'll like The Beatles As Musicians. Regardless, in appreciation of the freshness and intelligence of his work, I have to give Mr. Everett's books both five stars.

Worth Every Penny
I like the way this author compliments his readers' intelligence by writing about musical theory with clear detail. He describes how the Beatles achieved some of the sounds they did and gives good, in-depth analyses of many of their songs.

This book is truly a must-have for inveterate Beatles fans; musicians and lay people as well will certainly come away enriched after having read this. I can't recommend this one highly enough.

FIVE STARS X 100 !
Having studied herbs for over 15 years,I simply find this book "best of the best" among the + 1600 books I have so far gathered on herbs and herbal medicine, not only in English but also in German and French. It is a shame that Amazon does not have this title in stock anymore. This is what usually happens to real classics,anyway...

Deeply Amazing
if you already know how to talk to plants, dont buy it

This book puts it all together.
This herb book is one of the best I've read because of the vivid descriptions. I've been able to help myself much more effectively with herbs now than in the past due to the detailed descriptions. The author explains traditional systems of classifications and includes examples that really stick in the mind. It's obvious the author has a deep understanding and love of each plant.

You need this if you play Chopin
You need this book if you play Chopin. There is a wealth of information on playing Chopin's music directly from the composer and his pupils. It has answered many questions and cleared up some misconceptions I had about this music.

great book on how to play Chopin
For those of us who bungle at the keyboard and can always use more guidance, this book offers a great start in understanding Chopin's music. Probably the most difficult piece to play in public is Chopin Ballade No. 4, and Chopin offers some incredible insight into how he wanted it played. As you know, the music notation on the sheet cannot cover every intention of the composer, much like writing cannot capture everything, but most of what we want to say. This book supplements your understanding of the music. I would not be surprised if your great piano teacher pulls material out of this book in order to advise you on how to play Chopin.

A Great Historical Document
This book is wonderful for understanding Chopin's philosophies on technique and musicianship. One important thing you learn in reading this book, however, is that the piano has changed dramatically since Chopin's time. My main reason for reading this book was to gain valuable information about how to improve my technique for playing Chopin. Although I definitely learned a lot by reading this book, the issues relating to Chopin's advice about technique are unfortunately not as relevant on pianos today as I was hoping. In short, it's a great read, but will not solve all your Chopin technique problems.

The Cosmic Code: Quantum Physics As the Language of Nature

The best book on a complex, abstract subject
This is the best Quantum Physics book even written for the lay man. Infact, it might even be the best popular science book ever written. I have been a fan of this book for over 15 years and I feel that it is "must read" for every student involved or pursuing any branch of pure science (not necessarily physics).

Amazingly well explained concepts that stream you to the miniscule, abstract world of Quantum Mechanics.

A durable, indelible work...
I've been a fan of this book since it was published in hard back in 1982 and recent re-reading remind me that it is still one of the best, most accessible lay books on quantum physics that has ever been written. It is a little hard to track down sometimes, but perhaps they will eventually reissue it. Unfortunately, Heinz Pagels died in a mountain climbing accident years ago and won't be able to update this wonderful book. It would be great if one of his many colleagues and admirers would undertake to do it.

A Solid Introduction to Quantum Reality
Pagels' work is understandably the best layperson introduction to both interpreting and understanding Quantum Mechanics. It is a wonderful prelude to Omnes' book, Understanding Quantum Mechanics, and ties in much of elementary particle physics from Bohr to Gell-Mann.

The most remarkable part of this book is Pagels' lucid discussion on Bell's Inequality. Bell's Theorem, for those who are interested, forever demolishes the Einsteinian views of local causality, and of hidden variable determinism. Bell derived his classical probability and showed that either we have a violation of local causality (resulting in Einstein turning in his grave) OR, that if hidden variable theories are operative in the wave function, they do so non-locally (i.e. at the edge of spacetime).

In my own lectures and discussions, I have used Pagels' expose to derive a non two-additive Borel measure which explains the non-linear effects we see in actual polarization experiments of Bell's type. Indeed, Pagels gave life and meaning to my Complex-Valued Influence Probability Theory. In effect Pagels initial work, if read carefully, will expalin why we have quantum entanglement and the corkscrewing effects of oppositely-directed photons as they carry information non-locally and non-locally deterministically.

Disguised As a Poem: My Years Teaching Poetry at San Quentin
Published in Paperback by Northeastern University Press (September, 2000)
Author: Judith Tannenbaum
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

If I could give 6 stars, I would...
This book was introduced to me by Judith herself ( I was looking for material for a research paper ) ...Since I am a "starving" student, my mom bought me the book for x-mas, it sat for a few months since I was burnt out on prisons after my major report was done. But two days ago I picked up the book again, and I could no put it down. I have fallen in love with Spoon, Elmo and Judith's words many times over. I am in awe of her writing and her experience. I would hope that someday I could inspire others as she has inspired me. I have written a poem, I will share it with you all in hopes that you will buy this book...

"I feel as though I am reading a novel...

Everyonce in a while I stop and

remind myself the words I have read

are real."

Molly R>

Love is where you find it
Judith takes the reader into a world where few go willingly and fewer still would expect to find love. Her journey in story form reveals a great deal about herself and how the men she taught retained their dignity and self respect by sharing their thoughts of home, life, and love through poetry. I am not a poet and quite frankly find it difficult to understand many peots, but such is not the case with the works Judith brings forth from a handful of men most of us have written off as losers. Judith proves that love is present in everyone's heart, even those in prison.

Sharing poetry and so much more
This book takes readers inside a world most of us have never entered: a maximum security prison. But instead of showing the aspects of this world that we're familiar with from movies and TV, we see something different. By telling her own story -- the story of a poet sharing poetry with a particular group of prisoners -- Tannenbaum allows readers to look at our own assumptions about prison, prisoners and what it is to be human.

This is a very important, and very moving, book.

ME ENCANTO

Film as a subversive art

A classic
I agree with other reviewers. This is a great, indispensible book. I've spent the past twenty-five years or so trying to see all the films mentioned. I've made pretty good progress, but I still have a lot to go. My copy is all dog-eared and falling apart and I came here hoping to find one for my half-brother, who is just starting out in the movie biz and needs to know what's in this book. I hope it gets itself back into print. I'd love to see it updated to include subversive films created since 1974.

One of the best books i've ever read
I picked this up for a quarter at a book sale at our local library. I have read it straight through several times, and i still pick it up quite often and thumb through.

I don't know why it is out of print, but a good number of the films discussed in the book are just as difficult to find as the book itself. If you ever see this book anywhere, and can afford it, you have to buy it.

The best film book I've ever read
So densely packed with fascinating images and ideas that it's practically mind-expanding. I can think of few books more deserving of being restored to print, even if it occasionally smells too strongly of the early-70s.

The Most Amazing Book Ever!
Flour Power is simply the most amazing book and read I have ever come across. I love bread I love baking bread. However, until getting this book I only made white breads. Now, I am a whole meal bread lover.

Not only does this book cover why you should eat more whole grains, it tells you about the different grains, how to choose and buy a grain mill for milling your own flour at home. It has recipes, a listing of mill sellers and manufacturers, grain sources and more.

Once I started reading, I just couldn't put it down. I read it from cover to cover in one night. I have to tell you that doesn't happen often. If you bake bread by hand, bread machine, mixer, or whatever you have to have this book. ORDER IT NOW!

Flour Power
The author did a wonderful job of identifying a large variety of grain mills along with specific issues to consider about each such as overheating which destroys the nutrients one tries to save by home grinding, grinding ranges- powder to chunks, dry versus oily, dust, weight, and noise. The reader is well educated on a vast range of grains including gluten, protein, amino acid, and standard uses of each. On a very practical level, she includes detailed info on how to correct/diagnose a flopped loaf of bread with dough enhancers, ingredient altering, kneading and fermentation processes. There is a sampling of recipes along with appendices to find grain mills and grain sources. She takes the intimidation out of bread making by providing a fabulous foundation of knowledge!

Finally, an easy and delicious way to a healthier life!
Really loved your book! Interesting stuff interspersed with humorous facts...very easy reading. I found the historical facts especially entertaining. I'm now committed to a new and healthier way of eating (living)!

This book offers hope!
Cancer as a Turning Point is a well researched, informative and interesting book written by an expert in the field of cancer and cancer research. LeShan is a psychotherapist rather than a medical doctor and thus he approaches the topic of cancer from a different perspective. In the book he provides much useful and practical advice for cancer patients, their families and friends, therapists of cancer patients and medical professionals in the cancer field. This book is packed with information but progress a bit slowly at times. Overall, it fills a niche other cancer books miss because it addresses cancer more holistically and a more emotional, psychological point of view. While not perfect, this book is definitely worth reading for anyone touched by cancer.

Inspiring - entertaining - wonderful
LeShan's message is simple -- put your life before your illness. For years, he helped people with cancer to live the lives they wanted to live, to "sing their own song" as he puts it. These people frequently recovered from cancer in the process of working on their lives.

Some of these stories are amazing. The people you meet are ordinary folks with a lot of strikes against them, but they manage to transform their lives and, in a surprising number of cases, cure their cancer.

I apply LeShan's approach in my wellness workshops and in my book, The Art of Getting Well. Get your life right and your health will likely (although not necessarily) follow.

David Spero RN www.art-of-getting-well.com

Putting It All Together
LeShan's book is a excellent review and summary of important concepts in holistic approaches to cancer. He reminds us that holistic medicine rests on four basic axioms: (1) Health requires treatment of all levels -- physical, psychological, and spiritual; (2) Standardized approaches are not helpful -- treatment programs must be individualized; (3) Patients need to be part of decisions, given as much knowledge and authority as they will accept; (4) Everyone has self-healing abilities that need to be engaged.

An outstanding look at America.
It follows the lives of several people from the '50s to the '80s. It's an engaging read. I highly recommend it to all.

Webb's Timeless Classic
"A Country Such As This" is a timeless classic that chronicles the enormous social, economic and political upheavals that roiled America throughout the 1960s and 1970s. James Webb, a foremost author, Vietnam combat veteran and future Secretary of the Navy, presents a moving and incisive allegory in the life experiences of three 1951 U.S. Naval Academy graduates. Red Lescynski, Judd Smith and Joe Dingenfelder are "blood brothers" who swear an oath of allegiance to their country and each other. But their lives are destined to be sundered by the epochal changes sweeping the country: economic dislocation, an epidemic of divorce and fractured families and, most of all, societal and political divisions wrought by U.S. policy in Vietnam. Particularly insightful is the ongoing dialogue between Smith, a conservative Republican, and the ultra-liberal Dorothy Dingenfelder (Joe's estranged wife), who clash repeatedly and vociferously. Red Lesczynski's brutal plight in North Vietnam POW camps are heart rending, as are his difficulties assimilating into a fundamentally changed American society after a seven-year absence. Webb's descriptions of the opprobrious conduct of the anti-war movement are priceless.

We are fortunate that 18 years after its initial publication, the U.S. Navy's publishing arm has re-published "A Country Such As This," enabling a new generation of Americans to benefit from Webb's sage wisdom.

When did America change...?
Although this book is nearly 20 years old, its story, that of the transformation of America across the critical years of 1951 to 1976, is a must read for anyone of my generation (I was born in 1971) seeking to understand the recent history of our country beyond the cold facts of a textbook. It is a story of America upon which even modern documentaries hardly touch. Mr. Webb's narrative reminds us of our fathers' sacrifices. He reminds us that, despite the social climate of the volatile years of the Vietnam War in particular, there were men and women who were neither ashamed of their country nor unwilling to stand up for it. It is in that light that the greatest message of the book comes forth. He reminds us that, despite the aberrant behavior of the counter-culture and ranting and demonstrative noise of the anti-war demonstrators (both of which, in this presidential election year, will finally make their departure from the Washington), there were people who were willing to do what their country asked of them...because it was the right thing to do. Though fiction, ACSAT very much speaks to us from the reality that were the service families and proud Americans of the post-war generations. The story is gripping in itself, and the time it encompasses makes it a delight for any student of history to read.
