best developed group therapy
This is the best available therapy for depression, bipolar depression, panic attacks, and related disorders. Either alone, or with psychotropic medications, this group therapy succeeds where individual therapy fails and makes the patient more amenable to individual therapy, as not sabotaging mental health is a major focus. This is precisely the method used in cognitive therapy, effective since introduced widely in the 1980s, but not affordable by most of the population.
The Recovery method is still going strong after all these years.

How this book helped me
I was a nervous wreck and had been on the verge of suicide and could not find medication to alleviate my anxiety symptoms. I found RECOVERY through Alchoholics Ananymous, because I was not an alchoholic, but had reached a point where I could not sleep more than an hour a day and I found alchohol provided temporary relief but was afraid of becoming alchoholic. After reading this book and attending 6 months of meetings, the symptoms slowly disappeared and I was able to use the tools explained in the book to regulate my thoughts and as a result, regulate my feelings. This book is practical and very useful on an ongoing basis. I strongly recommend it.

sincerely,

michael

A Question of Degree...
I received an e-mail from a lady who told me that rational-emotive therapy saved her relationship and maybe even her life! And I believe her. But some of us need more heavy "Head Work" I believe. Real "Trench Warfare". Dr. Low teaches you cognitive-behavioral therapy in this book. But he doesn't leave it there. Daily readings. And ONE TWO-HOUR MEETING A WEEK WITH OTHER NUT CASES! Why am I screaming? Because it is easy to sit at your computer and be mean. But you can't get

away with this in real life. I read most of Low's book after my first meeting. I felt excruciating anxiety for 4 days BEFORE THE MEETING! I'm screaming again, right? Sorry. And my reading didn't really DIG IN until I got to the meeting. You say something and then everybody else contributes and then these cognitive techniques are really cut into your brain. This is the main text. So it is one-third of the program. The other two parts are daily application and one meeting a week. It seems that people with psychological problems make TREMENDOUS demands on themselves. This book will re-wire your brain. And that may take awhile. But remember this. According to Dr. Low, when you cut a "temper" sequence of working yourself up into anxiety and anger or down into depression, you will be automatically reducing those HIGHER STRESSORS which you will have to confront. Let's make it simple. Asking a question of somebody on the street may cause incredible anxiety. Let's say 99. But if you "spot" this scenerio and replace it with realistic thoughts ("I'm not doing anything wrong") and endorse yourself ("I did just fine") - this process will reduce the the anxiety of public speaking, say, from 1,000 to 859. Good deal, huh? As Low says, "Strike at the Weakest Link". If your dog dies and you have a BIG DEPRESSION of 876, let us say, and you practice this program and your spouse dies, you might only get hit with a 700! Whereas, before, it might have been 7,000, given you a stroke, and put you in a hospital. Do buy the book. I could philosophize about all the chapters (Like "The Courage to Make Mistakes", chapter 30), but I think you now understand the whole purpose of the text. If you don't want to wait, then find out where the closest Recovery, Inc. Meeting is (they are worldwide for those of you in Guam), take 5 minutes, run in, and buy a copy. Good luck.

excellent throughout
if you are interested in the martial culture, you must read this book. you will not be disappointed.

After all these years, 'Moving Zen' still holds up.
I just finished reading the book 'Moving Zen' for the second time. I had read it years ago, aoubd the late 70's, and I liked it back then. I can relate to many of the stories Mr. Nicol relates. Originally , I had trained in the Kenkojuku Shotokan--it is different than the JKA shotokan mentioned in the book.-- and since my training has changed to the modern approach of mixed-martial arts type training. Nonetheless, I still enjoy Nicol's book. If you want to get an insider's look to what it was like training in the JKA, and in Japan... it is a must read.

osu,

A. Bustillo

Most inspiring book I have ever read!
Nicole Sensei writes about his experiences in Japan starting from his arivel in 1962 to learn Karate and Judo. This book has inspired me to continue my training in Shotokan Karate even though I don't curently have enough money to go to a dojo. He also speaks about the little yet important ocurences that had inspired him to continue on with his dreams. One day i wish to have similar experiences and maybe met the man who wrote such an inspiring novel.

Too Cute!
I read a review in our local paper and bought this book for my husband as a stocking stuffer. I fell in love with it! We have a beagle mix and she makes some of the faces Lucy makes, but we could never be quick enough with our camera. This a keepsake for all dog owners. I look at it over and over and it's a real "feel good book". It's also a great, simple childrens' book. Great idea, great photgraphy.

Sentimental Journey
Welled up with tears as i turned each page. Geoff really got through on paper what it feels like to love a dog.

Fall in love with a furry face
Geoff Hansen has a remarkable gift for capturing the broad range of emotions expressed by his charming beagle, Lucy. This talented photographer invites everyone to share in the pure joy of watching his little friend explore her world. This collection of photographs successfully combines art and dogs. Anyone who loves either should own this book. They won't be disappointed!

Parent As Coach : Helping Your Teen Build a Life of Confidence, Courage and Compassion

Good Work Mom
what we have accomplished is subtly reflected into my life everywhere I go.

Reviewer, Teddy Gardner, Portland, OR United States
Are you looking for some new tools to communicate with your children that make a difference? Then this is the book for you! As a mother of two, I have experienced the benefits of Diana Haskin's wisdom when it comes to connecting with children and approaching them with deep listening, respect, love and clear requests. Parent As Coach is personal, practical and offers sage advice for building a strong foundation with your beloved children, as well as all others near and dear to your heart.

Developing Creative Contributors
I have found the advice in Parent As Coach to be clear, well thought-out, and immediately transferable to my experience coaching teenagers and families. The sheer practicality of the PAC approach places it far above most other books on the topic, and I highly recommend it to parents, older siblings, and anyone who finds themselves in the position of coaching, counseling or teaching teenagers.

This book receives my hardiest endorsement as a practical guide for moving beyond limited thinking about teenagers and on to developing the consciousness that will allow teens to become creative contributors of a caring society.

Diana Haskins has written a useful guide for understanding and applying the concepts of how to coach anyone to the unique challenges faced by growing young adults. She begins this work by acknowledging the importance of creating a strong foundation for the relationship by: deepening the connection between adult and teen; strengthening the relationship through heartfelt, effective communications; and fostering a progressive learning dynamic between both parties by laying the groundwork for mutual respect.

From this perspective of honoring and respecting the wisdom inherent in each teen, Diana presents the keys to effective life coaching and addresses some of the most essential concerns teens and parents face today. She reinforces her message by using the language of coaching as a means to respect and nurture, rather than diminish or abandon, the many talents, gifts and insights every teen possesses, giving them the confidence and courage necessary to developing their own unique, and therefore worthwhile, manifestations as fully expressing human beings.

By sharing the principles of coaching in this book about coaching teens, Ms. Haskins has given everyone interested in understanding the heart of coaching, an easy to read, practical guide for learning and applying coaching skills to every relationship. I look forward to additional work by this author, in part because of her clear, well-conceived style of writing that turns sometimes-clinical theories of parenting into a very straightforward sequence of steps that can be practiced by anyone of any age to improve the quality of their relationships. It is this transference-capacity that makes Parent As Coach such a useful guide for all readers.

Parent As Coach is a book I am happy to recommend to my own clients, professional associates and family. I recommend it to you as well.

In Passionate Minds, Claudia Roth Pierpont lifts several artists out of their hagiographical limbo and eases others (even Mae West and Margaret Mitchell) away from cliché and the condescending chortle. Her 11 essays offer a fascinating mix of biography, analysis, and elegant aphorism. Yet Pierpont also lets her women speak for themselves, and they often do so eloquently and unexpectedly. Zora Neale Hurston, for example, writes: "Sometimes, I feel discriminated against, but it does not make me angry.... It merely astonishes me. How can any deny themselves the pleasure of my company?"

Pierpont is interested in both reality and reception: how these writers altered the world, but also how they have been viewed--their lives and visions disseminated and vitiated, ritually patronized, misinterpreted, and reinvented. As she declares, with typical wit, "There is hardly a woman here who would not be scandalized to find herself in company with most of the others. Hannah Arendt and Ayn Rand, Gertrude Stein and Mae West, Doris Lessing and Anaïs Nin, Zora Neale Hurston and Eudora Welty, Marina Tsvetaeva and Mary McCarthy: what could they possibly have in common?" Yet even while she proves that achievement and reputation don't necessarily go hand in hand, Pierpont makes it clear that all her subjects refused to make the easy concessions. (At the same time, these hyperaware individuals often lacked--and sometimes deliberately skirted--self-knowledge.)

It's difficult to elevate a few pieces above the rest, since the standard is so high (all appeared in The New Yorker). But those on Stein, Lessing, Hurston, and, yes, Rand and Mitchell offer continual enlightenment and surprise. Pierpont is unafraid of generalization. In her piece on Anaïs Nin, for instance, she declares: "The real and bottomless subject of Nin's diary is not sex, or the flowering of womanhood, but deceit." Elsewhere, she rescues Lessing from her harsher critics:

Despite her theories and her ethics and the range of her literary personae--the African realist, the London scene painter, the anguished psychologist, the social prophet--Lessing is in essence a storyteller, with a rare gift for getting characters on their feet and for setting the wind stirring the curtains with language so apparently simple it betrays no method at all. The classical concision of the story form seems to induce in her an unusually clear-eyed mental energy, an urge to pick the locks of the elaborate cages she constructs in her novels.
Pierpont is also fond of the startling detail, the quote that reverses expectation, and even the pun. (After a delightful summary of The Fountainhead, she writes, "It is surely gratuitous to point out that the author suffered from an edifice complex.") In Passionate Minds this author repeatedly shows us the rewards of close reading and historical context. Even her asides are inspiring. At one point, she avers, "The greatest Russian translator of Shakespeare's tragedies, Pasternak played the Hamlet of the Revolution, much as Mayakovsky had been its Mercutio." Wonder how these tragic male figures made it into a book on "women rewriting the world"? Open this collection and read on. --Kerry Fried

An inspiring collection of essays
I had never read any of these 11 previously published pieces before, so I really felt like I hit the motherlode when I chanced upon this collection in the local library. Scholarly, yet entertaining and compulsively readable; not a combination one often encounters. From Anais Nin thru Margaret Mitchell, Ayn Rand, Hannah Arendt and 8 more women, this book sketches an unforgettable miniature of each and even dishes the dirt with elan.

Literary criticism that's scholarly, crisp and relishable.
Exhaustively researched and knowledgeably sifted, Passionate Minds: Women Rewriting the World is an incisively engaging work that exhilarates the mind while also extending beyound the mere bland categorization of 'biography' and 'women's studies,' for it stretches quite easily into other academic dimensions: sociology, psychology, history and economics; it is a work that is more than what it is promoted to be. Pierpont's succinct yet smooth academic prose is honed and streamlined; excess language and descriptive clutter is cast aside, and only the germane pith, the be-all and end-all, is critically dissected. Writing is a soul-searching craft-that more often than not-offers an intellectual and spiritual cartharsis. It is a powerful talent (one of many) by which many positive changes can be enacted, for when asked why they do what they do, writers, broadly speaking, would never hesitate to say, "The pen is mightier than the sword." The twelve writers, authors in Passionate Minds would have used the above-in varying degrees-as a life philosophy. From Hannah Arendt and Ayn Rand to Olive Schreiner and Marina Tsvetaeva, the lives profiled were not of simple women who 'slothfully' mused over global issues and then did nothing about them. The concerns, though mostly relegated to a specific gender, nonetheless, addressed all of humanity. Economic equality and intellectual stimulation, rather than artistic expression, would be at the top of the pyramid in this case. The broader essence of the book is how a person or persons broaches a subject that is of pressing concern to him or herself. What tools could and can be used to rectify specific areas that have long ago been ignored or deemed too weighty in intensity to even approach? In Ayn Rand's case, could it be done through collectivism or individualism? For Hannah Arendt and Mary McCarthy especially, collectivism would tower, the two probably being the modernized propellant of the literati activist, now being emulated. But the one thing that linked all these women was the printed word, printed utterances that came in the form of essays, novels, plays, journalism, poetry. These were the weapons of transformation (see Mae West, Doris Lessing, Anais Nin), racial exploration (see Zora Neale Hurston, Margaret Mitchell) and onward. What is remarkable about these lives is that they either rose from abject poverty and anguish or dived headlong into it in order to write, to do something that had a greater and profound good that was not yet visible to the masses: "I write for thee/I suffer privately/ And glory comes when I am gone..." These writers had battle scars from sacrifice. And the improvement is so little.

Buy this book
Thank God for collections----I missed some of these pieces upon their first appearence in The New Yorker, and they're all fascinating and well written. Pierpont combines the skills of essayist, biographer/profiler, and critic with assurance and wit. It's hard to praise this book too highly. Here's hoping she comes out with another collection in this vein before too long.

Paul On Trial The Book Of Acts As A Defense Of Christianity

Interesting Approach to Acts
I read this book about 2 years ago, and am still fascinated by its premise and the well-reasoned approach used to support that premise. Mauck's writing is clear and compelling, and got me thinking about the Book of Acts in a far different way than I ever had before. To the best of my knowledge, there is no other book that treats Acts as a legal document and Mauck's arguments gripped me to read further and revisit the Bible itself in light of this idea.

I am neither a law student nor Bible scholar, just a Christian interested in learning more about my faith. I highly recommend Paul on Trial to anyone who is interested in more fully exploring the early Christian church and Paul's challenges in spreading the Gospel.

Contributes to a deeper understanding of Christianity
I am still reading this book, but want to provide a comment. This book is worth the effort to read, study, and contemplate. I agree with all of the preceding reviews. For me, Mr. Mauck's book is functioning like a good brass or gold polish. It is stripping away the grime and tarnish of twenty centuries as well as my own understanding and appreciation of the Book of Acts, cleaning and polishing it right down to it's original design details and shape. I am now seeing things in Acts and the Gospel Of Luke that either I never was aware of before or have always wondered about but didn't know more. This book is wonderful because in its way, it reveals Christianity as it is, a uniquely radical, powerful phenomenon that is supernaturally guided and fueled, not the pervasive, almost ambient cultural Christianity that we all tend to take for granted, for good or ill.

4 Stars for content plus 1 Star for guts = 5 Stars
I found that this is not a book that can be read quickly, it is more like a text book that I could only take in smaller portions in conjunction with going through ACTS in a small group Bible Study. I would like to know who the people are that are slamming this author, I would really like to know their arugments against his theory, because this is very powerful stuff, Canonization of the Bible speaking...not even Chuck Missler or Hal Lindsey thought of this theory before Mr. Mauck.

I simply can't think of a reason why anyone would doubt his theory that Luke wrote what has become to be known as Acts as a defense of Paul and the earliest Jesus/Gospel followers...and he pulls the book of Luke into the same theory, although the title doesn't mention this fact. At a minimum, Acts should have been titled "Acts of the Holy Spirit", more so than "Acts of the Apostles", as many refer to it. But now after reading this book, Acts should be retitled in all new pressings of Protestant Bibles to more reflect this book's arguments.

This will probably be his only book, unless someone un-earths some new letters or documents in an archeology dig in the middle east that were written for the same trial-type cause. This was a job well-done, by someone who gets it that we worship the Jewish faith fulfilled. God Bless.

Not for the Indoor Pet
I loved this book very much and rate it highly, but in my mind, the only drawback to this book is the fact that it mainly focussed on breeding, showing, and outdoor rabbits. Which is all perfectly fine if you plan on doing those things with your pet (or are intrested in that aspect of rabbits). But I (as the owner of a spoiled "urban rabbit") do not necessarily enjoy that part of the book very much. Sandy Crook presents her information in a wonderful and pleasing manner and has loads of CUTE bunny photographs. There is also useful information on just about every aspect of rabbits. A must for new owners!

Really wonderful book!
This has to be the BEST rabbit book out there! It's chock full or information sure to please and delight both the pet owner and the rabbit breeder (and those who are somewhere in between!).
Mrs Crook is known as "Mother of the Lops" - and she proves that she is rightly named so in this wonderful book about rabbits.
Although the title is "Lop Rabbits As Pets" the information in here is applicable to any breed of rabbit, and if you only ever buy one rabbit book - this is the one!

Be sure to check out Petbunny.com for all your rabbit needs!

Lop Rabbits
We own a lop rabbit named Benjamin, and we bought this book. It has quite a bit of good information on rabbits as pets, but the strongest aspects of this book are the collection of photographs of all kinds of lop bunnies and the listing at the end of all the breeds of lop rabbits.

Monsters and Magical Sticks or There's No Such Thing As Hypnosis

A Classic
OK, let's start with the flaws:

1. Neuroscientist Michael S. Gazzaniga is mentioned about half a dozen times, and almost every time, even in the Bibliography, his name is spelt "Gazzaneza".

That's it. End of flaws.
Everything else is just terrific and for anyone interested in hypnosis, or NLP, or both, this is one of those rare books You simply Must Have.

At the time of writing Amazon.com were pairing this book with "Training Trances" - which is a pretty powerful combination. But the books aren't just two stabs at the same material, they are significantly different views of much of the stuff that NLP is based on, and in particular the work of Milton Erickson.

The difference between the two books, and I say this with respect to all the authors, is that where "Training Trances" tells you what to DO, "Monsters and Magical Sticks" shows you how to LIVE "it".
(And in case you were thinking that "it" is Ericksonian-style hypnosis, as the book's subtitle says: "There's No Such Thing As Hypnosis?")

Just like "Training Trances", and despite its apparent simplicity this is a book that can be read over and over again. And each time you read it you'll find something that you didn't get before.

If this book is anything to go by, Dr Steven Heller seems to have been very much in the same mould as Milton Erickson, gentle, tolerant, humorous, caring, etc., etc.
At the end of the Epilogue, Nicholas Tharcher has included a brief obituary that includes these words:

"Though his work and his legacy endures, his presence, his sense of humor, and his enormous energy are gone. As one of his many friends I miss him."

By the time you finish reading this book, the only book by Heller now in print, I wouldn't be at all surprised if you feel much the same way.

A great book. Do yourself a BIG FAVOUR and get it.

LOVE THIS BOOK
Not only did I find this book instructive, but very entertaining to read. I highly appreciate the fact that this book treats hypnosis as a natural aspect of daily life and yes it can be used intentionally and covertly as in this story from the book:

"One evening, a group of friends and I were having dinner at a local restaurant. Our waiter was very distracted and he appeared to be agitated and depressed. He was abrupt, slow and unfriendly. As a result, our service left a great deal to be desired. Since I wanted to have an enjoyable evening, I decided to "talk funny" to him in order to help him feel better.

As he walked by our table holding a coffee pot, I touched his arm and said, "I'm sorry that you forgot that special night ... with that special person ... those exciting things that happened ... those very warm feelings that would embarrass you to talk about ... since we are all strangers."

For a moment his face went blank; he looked up to his left; his face then lift up and he said, "How do you know about that?" He then smiled and began to laugh, and his whole attitude changed as if by magic. He said, "Wow. that was some night. I don't know how you know about it."

The next time he came to our table, I said to him, "Wasn't it simply amazing that when you remember those happy, warm feelings, your attitude continues to change, and you continue to feel even better?"

We received a delightful service throughout the rest of the evening. What was even nicer, was that as we left he told us that we were one of the nicest parties he had ever waited on. He also asked us to be sure and ask for him whenever we returned.

Now, I have absolutely no idea as to what he hallucinated, but my communication resulted in his going back into his own history. He then found an experience that filled in the blanks, and that memory helped him to change his whole attitude in a matter of seconds. Of course, there's no such thing as hypnosis, and if there is, he should have gone deeper and deeper into a trance."

Monsters and Magical Sticks
Several years ago a friend loaned me his copy of Monsters and Magical Sticks. Within a few pages I knew that I was reading the work of geniuses. For months after I searched for a copy to call my own. Finally I found one. Both my training and therapeutic style have been fantastically improved! I am thrilled that this jewel is now more readily accessible. IT'S A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE WHO CONDUCTS TRAININGS AND/OR THERAPY. My hope is to one day talk with Dr. Heller or Ms. Steele and/or to attend one of their trainings. ...

Ordinary people as monks and mystics
I found that this book "made sense" of my entire life, and I do agree the title is misleading. I gasped when I read a paragraph last night about the child who "survives" a schizophrenic parent. I have been in counseling for the past 45 years and no one could provide that "answer". The rest of the book speaks to me by giving me an understanding of the path I've chosen and for which I've been critized. She has a gift which she presents in this book to really understand the difficulties that individuals face when attempting a self-actualizing lifestyle.

Life-actualizing, life-affirming
As a life coach, I work with my clients to help them find what works for them in their lives and why. The irony of life coaching is that it is very difficult to coach yourself because you don't have that "observer" point of view.

I am a mystic in Dr. Sinetar's book. I can see now why I've always had interests in etymology and genealogy - I want to go back to the source. There were many revelations I learned about myself and this book helped me with one of the areas where I had difficulty - self-acceptance. I am forever grateful.

I do agree that this is not a book for everyone. I would recommend this book to people who have a spiritual nature and/or who know their need for "quiet time".

Lifestyles for self-discovery
Don't be misled by the title: this is a book about "living a self actualizing" life.

It can be (and was for me) the catalysis for major, significant life style changes. It inspires one to have "the courage of your convictions" and to live one's inner truth in the daily round of life.
