war of survival, ideas, pride
This is probably one of the most important books I've ever read. General Risner employs no verbal tricks in his account of his life as a POW in the Vietnam War; he simply states fact for fact. The visual images of torture are so gripping that despite the 114 pages of this book, it took me days before I turned the last page. And, when I had finally finished, my thoughts and actions were truly changed; I saw whole new levels to the war of ideas, of partisan politics. One passage that struck me in this book, and that I read over and over again, was how one of the factors of surivival for Risner was his belief that the American people were behind him. Ultimately, this book has given me courage that I didn't know I had inside me. This is a painful, extraordinary book.

Moving and inspirational. Renew your confidence in America!
This book is an enigma. Risner's style is not polished. He doesn't overwhelm with vocabulary or imagery. Rather, his friendly, relaxed, matter-of-fact manner invites you into Hanoi Hilton, into his cell, where you join him for 7 1/2 years of isolation, misery, agony, and pain. With simple, frank text, the author introduces the reader to the life of the POW with startling clarity. You will not soon forget the images found in this writing. It is clear why the Chief of Staff of the Air Force has included this book on the recommended reading list for USAF professionals. General Risner is a true American hero. His example of courage, intelligence, devotion, and honesty should be followed by us all. To read this book is to glimpse, if only for a few hours, the horror of Vietnamese prison life. General Risner reminds us about having faith in God, confidence in ourselves, and pride in our country.

A testament of hope........
To describe courage and bravery, strength and resilience, pride and professionalism, it only takes two words....Robinson Risner. In an ordeal that began in 1965 and lasted for a monumental seven and a half years, he was incarcerated in the Hanoi Hilton and Zoo prison compounds in North Vietnam after he was shot down.

Subjected to unspeakable tortures and barbaric conditions, Robinson Risner literally descended into a pit of hell from which he was eventually delivered out of by his relentless perseverance and his faith in God.

After reading The Passing of the Night, it reinforced my pride in America, our military, and the extraordinary stature of our convictions and beliefs in the most desperate of times.

Robison Risner's book is heartfelt, down to earth, and very moving in its portrayal and leaves a resounding message for everyone. No matter how difficult things may be in life, never lose faith in yourself and always know God will never give you more than you can handle.

This book comes highly recommended to anyone and everyone.

Sew straight lines? Make a Quilt!
This is my favorite of Ursula's 3 books, much easier than the other two (which are also wonderful) and VERY easy to adapt to the growing child. I currently have 6 of her designs in que for quilting for babies due, to friends and family AND am an avid scrapbooker, work part-time, raising twin toddlers...YOU CAN DO IT with this book! If you can sew a straight line, you can make a quilt! I give this book to anyone even thinking of learning to quilt. The "recipes" are easy and very understandable!

By far the BEST in the series!!!
10 different quilts each photographed in bold colors and then in soft pastels. This is an awesome detail because you would not believe how different each pattern looks just switching between bold and soft colors!!

The quilts are listed from easiest to "most difficult", but even the most difficult one could still be completed by a first time quilter!! The patterns are beautiful yet so simple to create.

Instructions for each quilt are very clear and easy to follow. The book even suggests which way to iron each and every seam!!
The instructions for each pattern will only make a "baby" size quilt, but because the instructions are so well laid out (especailly the material requirements) it is VERY easy to adapt the instructions to make a larger size quilt. (So it goes far beyond baby quilts!!!)

Oh, and did I mention how easy, Easy, EASY these quilts are to make??? The truly great thing about them though is they look far more sophisticated and complicated than they really are!

You will not be disappointed with this book!

Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful
If you like to make baby quilts this is the book for you! There are so many beautiful baby quilts in this book and they are easy to make! I am a beginning quilter and have made 3 of the quilts in the book. The instructions are clear and easy and they even have arrows pointing in the direction of which way to press your seams. I really like the pictures of the different finished quilts shown in the book too, and the different variations of the same quilt. I have very little creativity when it comes to putting fabric together for a quilt but this book gives you some inspiration!

Informative, entertaining, inspiring
This is an excellent book -- informative, entertaining, and inspiring! It offers great insights for those who want to take the step to live together before marriage, those who want a long term relationship without marriage, as well as people who just want to understand why so many are choosing this path. The subtitle is "The Essential Guide to Living Together as an Unmarried Couple" and this book really does have just about everything you'd want to know! It includes heartfelt stories from many people's lives. My partner and I especially enjoyed reading Solot and Miller's ten ways to have fun together without breaking the bank--great advice for any couple who want to keep the spark alive.

Great ideas and fun to read
I really liked this book. The authors did a terrific job of combining all sorts of practical advice with lots of real life stories that kept me interested and even fascinated. As an unmarried person living with a partner, I found it filled with good ideas.

What I liked the best was all the fascinating anecdotes and stories. Not only were they interesting in themselves, but they brought home important points about the struggles and victories of unmarried partners trying to make a happy life together. And I like the way the text is filled with boxes and sidebars that keep it interesting. They add all sorts of extra information - from poems to statistics.

If you're in an unmarried relationship, whether you're thinking about living together, you've recently joined households, or you've been living together for years, this book will give you ways to enhance your relationship. Get a copy for yourself, and, while you're at it, get one for your parents!

Great Book
This is an essential ready for anyone living with a domestic partner of either sex. It offers support for those who do not want to get married and those who can not.

That and its lots of fun to leave lying around when his mother comes over!

Asia Rising: Why America Will Prosper As Asia's Economies Boom

Correct prediction
Writing in 1995, Rohwer predicted China's GDP growth to slow to 6-7% a year over the next decade. (p. 166) Looking back on his words, it is clear that he got it right. In the last ten years China has been growing at an average of 7-8% per year. Growth dipped below 7% around the turn of the millennium. It has picked up again since then.

His optimism in this book and in its sequel "Remade in America" is fully justified. By 2020, China should have the world's third largest economy in nominal GDP, according to Professor Richard Cooper of Harvard, after the US and Japan, and half a trillion dollars larger than the fourth largest, Germany.

By 2025, according to the US Department of Energy's estimates, China's economy will be worth some $5 trillion, while Japan's will be under $7 trillion, and America's under $20 trillion. If the Chinese currency rises in value by as much as 50% against the dollar and the yen - which is perfectly possible over the next 20 years - China's nominal GDP could well be in excess of $7 trillion, and thus the second largest economy in the world.

In purchasing power parity, China's economy may well be equal in absolute size to America's by 2015 according to Angus Maddison of the OECD, or by 2020 based on the calculations of Professor Gregory Chow of Princeton. By 2025 China's PPP should be well ahead of America's.

So in about twenty years' time, China's economy could be the SECOND or THIRD largest in the world depending on the exchange rates. (However, even if second, China will still be only 40% the size of America.) In PPP, China could be larger than America.

Overall, Jim Rohwer's optimism was fully justified both by events since his writing of this and his following book, and by calculations made by distinguished and reliable sources. Rohwer's prediction, that China is going to be a big deal (essentially, the second largest economy after the United States), is in the process of being fulfilled to the letter. This compounds the tragedy that this brilliant man, who was killed in an accident in Sept 2001, will never see China twenty years from now, a wish he expressed in the Prologue of this book.

Extraordinary & Comprehensive Survey
First, a bit of bad news: Rohwer died in a boating accident in France in Sept, 2001. So there won't be a second edition to this or any of his other books.

Rohwer (Berkeley MA in Economics, Harvard JD), who was an investment banker with CSFB in Hong Kong, brought a unique set of qualifications to his research. Some people criticized Rohwer for failing to predict the Asian economic crisis in 1998. (One book has the title: "Asia Falling".) But he did, on page 18: "My guess in that, around 2000, Asia's economic growth will suddenly slow down." This book was first published in 1995, so he saw it coming - even though his timing wasn't perfect. The fact that he made such a prediction, contrary to the tone and theme of his own book, is suggestive. Rohwer was prophetic.

Rohwer's sequel: "Remade in America" is just as good. Writing at the height of America's boom, he saw America's slowdown coming, and went on to suggest continuing strength in China's growth. Nothing has happened so far to contradict anything Rohwer wrote.

Other books I also recommend include "Thunder from the East" by Nicholas Kristof & Sheryl WuDunn. This couple won the Pulitzer Prize for the NY Times for their China reporting, and their CVs are sterling. "The Rise of China" by William Overholt (Harvard BA, Yale PhD), a former banker at Bankers Trust in Hong Kong, is slightly dated, but shows the brilliant judgment of the author. "China's Economic Transformation" by Professor Gregory Chow, Princeton University's former chief of econometrics, brings Chow's specialist quantitative skills to bear on an authoritative analysis of China's economy. All these authors would no doubt support Rohwer's findings and applaud his outstanding research. I myself can't praise Rohwer enough.

At $6 trillion China is, according to the CIA World Factbook, the world's second largest economy and 13% of the world's total (Gross World Product: $47 in PPP), an economic giant which is expanding much faster than any major economy in the world - including India's. China is anything but "a modest country at best." (Bill Emmott)

The Autobiography of Jesus Christ as Told to

a passionate account
Neil Elliot has written a very creative and interesting account of the life of Jesus as if it were told to him personally. I find this to be a facsinating sort of 'alternative' take on the myth of Christ. Sometimes it's good to explore the concept of divinity from a more personal angle, as that is how each of us are supposed to experience Jesus, anyway.

Elliot's account is rich in well-researched historical detail, which lends credence to his engaging interpretation. I kept reading long after my eyes blurred from absorbing so much print in one go. Highly recommended.

What an experience
Wow...what an interesting book...I have not read it all yet, but I feel the need to write this review even before turning the last page. In fact, even if the rest of the book is terrible I could care less because I have already got a great experience out of it.

This is a story that easily leads you to think of the similarities between the World in the period of Jesus Christ and the World today. The description of the life styles of the Romans of the Empire are so similar to what we see around us today that you cannot not realise that maybe it is time for another Messiah to come back and rescue our often perceived unhappy World... thirsty of some spiritual nourishment.
And while you are reading still thinking that the book will evolve all around this theme, the Writer changes his focus and gives us a more personal introspective of life. He describes the meaning of having a beloved family and still feel the urge of reaching out to the unknown World, living away from your own Motherland, the meaning of love and passion and the
Melancholy that one suffers because of the cruelty of illness and death. I think the author, Neil Elliot, has used Jesus as a mean to teach us great truths.

Jesus as a man - what a wonderful story!
I can't recommend this book highly enough! It satisfied me at so many different levels. To be entertained, to laugh and cry, to learn, and finally to be inspired - to find all that in one book is the ultimate reading experience. I was hooked from the moment I picked it up. For someone who's not religious nor even a Christian, I was surprised to find myself so engrossed in a book about the leading figure in Christianity. But to me, it wasn't so much a book about a religion as about a man and his life in a distant time and place. And a life that could easily be transposed into the present. I heard my grandfather's voice echoing from the pages, that gently sarcastic humour, the unique turn of a phrase. As Jesus recounted his early years, I could imagine myself experiencing the same feelings and doubts and joys. Were they real? Who knows. Who cares. The story by itself would have been enough to qualify this book as a good read. The rich historical background that was woven throughout the narrative made the book truly outstanding. Neil Elliott is one of the best writers I've come across in a long time. He doesn't try to use gimmickry or stylistic tricks - just clear and honest writing that comes straight from the heart.

Full of information
This has been a very helpful book, explaining a lot of our hamster's behavior and helping us to care for her better. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is that, once in a while, it leaves you hanging. For example, it explains the potential problems with various types of bedding material, but never comes right out and says which is best. Still, it's well worth getting, even if it's not perfect.

Best Book on Dwarfs
I wanted to hug this book, the pictures of the Dwaf Hamsters are so cute and cuddly. I really enjoyed reading about how to tame you Hammie, breeding, and personality. Its so cool that Dwarfs have their own book all about them, this is the only book you'll need, u have to get it!

LOTS OF PICTURES!
What makes a good book about hamsters? Lots of PICTURES. And this book has plenty! Cute little dwarfies smiling, dancing doing back flips, playing basketball and being cuuuute! Photographs, not just drawings. I think the best part of it is that only sick or injured hamsters are drawn. That way you never get to see an actual hamster in bad condition. Photos of animals that have been injured can be disturbing, especially for dwarf hamster-obsessed people like me. There are like 4 or 5 drawings only, and LOTS of photos. Tons! I love this book!
Even though it's pretty thin, this manual is close to complete. It focuses on the eveyday pet owner, not just on breeders. There are not too many home remedies, it mostly recommends taking your pet to the vet. The section on recuperating a lost hamster is smart. Valuable information. It doesn't go too technical but it tells it just like it is. No kiddie speak. Also, most of the hamsters pictured are gray, just like my own Campbell's dwarf. That has made the book so much more enjoyable. There's a section on how to distinguish between 4 types of dwarf hamsters.
Get this book! You will want to eat it!

Wonderful Book
It has been a long time, probably eight years, since I read this book, but I still remember it fondly. I'm now a senior in college, majoring in history, and as I sat in History of World War II today, I thought of how much I learned from this book. I enjoyed it, and now I really want to reread it. It is a good read, and it stays with you. A must for anyone interested in the perspective of a civilian living under Nazi and later Russian occupation. I also particularly remember the afterward and how much I enjoyed it, how the author fell in love with an American and married him. It was so touching, and it made me love the book even more.

This book was great!
I'm reading this book for the second time and I still love it! It's about a ballet dancer named Emmy, who struggles with the changes of World War 2 and how she copes with going from a sheltered life to poverty. I whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone

After 11 years....
Eleven years after the first time I read this book, it is still one of my favorites. I ordered it when I was in the 7th grade from one of those Scholastic order sheets, and read it over and over and over again. Now I teach 7th grade and am excited to read it to my class. I lost my original copy, but am extremely relieved to have found a copy on-line. This copy I will keep close at all times!

Easy & Simple and Just right for a busy person.
I have recently bought several cook books.

I need some that are easy, but not boring.

This book delivers on so many levels.

I find that I don't need to be overwhelmed by working 9-12 hours and then coming home to try and fix something in little time.

This book I only had delievered today.

So far at least three lady's have asked to look at it.
One even coming back to get the book information so that she could go out and buy this.

This was a good decision in buying this as it delivers what it promises.

No time to cook ? Bet you'll love this book!
I absolutely adore this book. I was cooking for my harassed little brother (single father of three) during a visit and he was exhausted all the time from work and kids. This book now makes his life so much easier and much more relaxed (at least every time he makes dinner)! Chef Schloss is the BEST!

A gem of a cookbook !!!
With probably 400 or so cookbooks in my collection, how could there be room or reason for another one? This is one of my all-time favorites! And one of the reasons has not been mentioned by any of the previous reviewers: Simple ways to use the contents of all of the jars and bottles on the refrigerator door!! The recipes are so simple and delicious. I have given it to friends and family members over and over. Thank you Andrew Schloss. Please reprint this book!!

I Can Sing En Francais! : Fun Songs for Learning French
I bought this book thinking it also had the cassette with it. It does not. Customer reviews which write about the cassette are followed with a note from Amazon that it is a review for the "Hard Cover" edition.

If you notice right below the reading level for this item, it says "Hard Cover". So I thought that this was the edition that includes the cassette. It does not.

The book seems great otherwise, but you MUST know French and be able to read music though. It is difficult to know what tune you should be singing in if you can't read musical notes.

Great!
My 4 year old niece who doesn't know a word of French learnt to sing a long after a few days. My 3 year old son loves to listen to the songs, and reading the book while listening to the music. The book is pleasing for children will lots of illustrations. We also use the book to talk about what's on the pages and can spend a long time just reading it! This is a great gift idea.

Great for babies!
My 9.5 month old son lights up the minute I press play. We dance and bounce to these adorable songs while I am learning the words. I am very amused that he enjoys this cassette more than the ones I have with children's songs in english.
