Oracle made a big decision a couple of years ago. The company decided to open certain aspects of its relational database management system (RDBMS) to manipulation by outside software. That architectural decision enabled a whole community of specialized software developers to thrive. In Oracle & Open Source, Andy Duncan and Sean Hull explore the universe of open source (that is, modifiable and largely free) software for Oracle applications. The authors approach the subject from two angles: that of database administrators who simply want to locate, download, and use tools that others have created, and that of the software developer who wants to learn about and take advantage of the hooks Oracle has built into its products.

The downloaders will be pleased with documentation of Orac, Oddis, Karma, Oracletool, GNOME-DB, and other ready-to-run administration and design tools. The book explains what each tool does, where it comes from, how to install it, and how to use it (complete with hallmark O'Reilly options lists in most cases). The programmer set, eager to contribute to the collection of open-source Oracle tools, will learn a lot from documentation of Oracle-specific libraries for various languages, including Oratcl for Tcl/Tk, several Perl modules, DCOracle for Python, and the Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) classes for Java. Some programmers may find the introductory sections too general in focus, but they'll be pleased by sections that explain the use of specific methods and functions. --David Wall

Topics covered: The collection of libraries that have come into existence to facilitate interaction with Oracle databases from within home-grown software, as well as programs that others have written to take advantage of those libraries.

Superb Introduction
If you've come from the Oracle mainstream like me, you're probably not even aware of the breadth of open source apps and tools that can be used with the database. You may have had an inkling from the porting of Oracle to Linux, and Oracle's adoption of Apache and modules such as mod_perl, but that's only the surface.

When I first spied "Oracle and Open Source" by Andy Duncan and Sean Hull, I was so intrigued that I had to buy it. I couldn't believe that there was enough out there to write a book on. How wrong I was.

The two authors have done an excellent job of collecting information on:

* Programming environments, tools, languages (Python, Perl, Tcl, Tk)
* Database maintenance tools - including Orac, Oddis (Tk);
* Web-based monitoring tools for Oracle (such as Karma, Oracletool) and the network too (Big Brother)
* Plus Open Source Java apps (even the Java isn't open source itself), Gnome/GTK+ and more.

The book's aim is to introduce you to the rich range of technologies rather than being the definitive reference. It provides enough to get the tools installed and to set you on your way. And once you're up and running, the authors list the web pages and books that will take you to the next level. I never knew so much was available, but with the groundswell of support from the Open Source community as evidenced on the Internet and in this excellent book, I'm learning fast.

Eye Opener for enterprise user
I find the content exciting and very educational. I am a developer in the corporate enviroenment and mainly use mainstreem software. But this book opens a new world of knowledge and experties. The URL's are up to date and you can learn and explore what ever you like in the book extensively. It is useful stuff and can bring new skills to your CV.

An eye opener for Oracle lovers
Found this book very useful and a real eye opener for those who like myself believed that all your Oracle goodies coming from Oracle Corp. A set of Open Source tools and applications described in this book is amazing. In particular, DB Prism/Cocoon is something that I jumped in right away. Whether you are DBA, developer or just a plain user of Oracle databases, you will find something that will benefit you/your business. Money well spent.

Hilarious Creativity!
I laughed and laughed! These cartoons are histerical! Every person who has ever built or designed a home or constructed any building whatsoever will enjoy this book! Its unique size and cover makes a great socking stuffer for all my "construction clients."

A very funny book
I think it is great that a professional can make fun of his profession and make other people laugh. It is all done in a very "non-bashing" way and should be read by all architects and design workers. They will learn a few things about their profession from Archi-Toons that they did not know.

Delightful and pleasing
What a delightful and humorus approach by an architect about his own profession. I am sure that everyone in the architectual and design profession or anyone in a family associated with someone in this profession will enjoy the humor in these delightful cartoons.

Vice President - Pro*Act Specialties
What I most love about this book is the wonderfully witty tone in which it is written. I found myself chuckling throughout. It encapusulates history very well making me excited to read more. Civetello has a fresh style and brings exciting new research to the table so that even well schooled chefs will be surprised. Linda's book is proof that the beauty of the food profession is that there is alwyas something new to learn!
Great reference list!

The best food history book out today!!!!!
I am a chef, nutrtionist and food media personality, and I found this book to be excellent! Ms. Civitello describes with great accuracy and wit, the history of food, and how it effects the way we eat today. I highly recommend this for food pros as well as those just interested in history.

Great
I was very pleased by the amount of information on history and culture provided by this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and had trouble putting it down. The book is interesting, easy to read and highly informative. I had certainly never realized how our past has been shaped by our cuisine. A Better View of Bess
If you haven't read "Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire," you're likely to come away from "Elizabeth and Georgiana" with a very positive view of Lady Elizabeth Foster. I had read "Georgiana," and I didn't find Bess all that likable, even after reading Chapman's glowing chapters about her life. I did, however, love this book and found it very interesting and well done. There are unanswered questions, though, about Bess and the Duke's children and what the Duchess knew; but, Chapman does a good job of filling us in on what happened to the main characters after Bess's death. Easy to read, filled with information about the Georgian period (for instance, a good explanation of how people traveled in the time), and not so mired in politics of the day as "Georgiana . . ." is.

Eliazbeth & Georgiana
While I had read about the triangular relationship between Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and Lady Elizabeth Foster, nick-named Bess, I never realized that Bess had such colorful life. The authors use letters and other historical documents to present Bess in a more positive way, than previously recorded. It is a fascinating biography.

Excellent book on the lives of two amazing women sharing the same man. Highly recommend it if you like reading about 'ton' society in late 18th-early 19th century England.

Op Amps for Everyone

One for the designer's bookshelf
Written by experienced, practicing engineers from Texas Instruments, this book provides the best general coverage of circuit design with op amps that I have seen. While there are some parts that provide only a basic introduction to complex areas, there is enough here for the learner to take and make a start with before attempting a deeper study of specialist areas.

Theory is gently introduced and practical examples given. Especially valuable are the circuit layout techniques given. They are obviously the result of TI's hard-won experience.

You could use this as an introductory text for formal learning or self education, or just have it to hand as a reference.

To fully make use of this book you should have a grounding in circuit theory and solid state design equivalent to a first or second year university or TAFE student. The self-educated could make use of it, provided they have not skipped matrix algebra or complex numbers.

Chapter headings include
Development of the ideal op amp equations
-inverting and non-inverting, adders, differential amps, complex feedback, video amps. A comprehensive coverage of the theory.
Single supply op am p design techniques
-circuit analysis and simultaneous equations. You really need to go back to a good text of matrix algebra and follow up on this.
Feedback and stability theory.
-a good introduction, but you need to read, say, Sedra & Smith after this.
Instrumentation: Sensors to A/D convertors
-transducer types, design procedures, ADC issues. Excellent introduction.
Wireless communication: signal conditioning for If sampling
-restricted to GSM and W-CDMA mobile/cellular phones. Some can be applied to digital radio, but there is better elsewhere for other wireless applications.
Interfacing D/A converters and loads
-load characteristics, D/A converters, error budgets. Good treatment of design issues which are often hard to find information on.
Sine wave oscillators
-comprehensive treatment of phase shift and quadrature oscillators at baseband.
Active filter design techniques.
-low pass, high pass, band pass, band reject, all-pass. Comprehensive coverage, but you should then go on to Chen or other standards for more detail.
Circuit board layout techniques
-excellent treatment. There is a lot to be learned here!
Designing low-voltage op amp circuits.
-good practical hints and tips.

There are also forty well-chosen practical circuits including a number of analogue computer circuits (that neglected topic) that have modern, non-computing uses.

Good book on op-amps
This book is good for both beginners and professionals. The first chapters have introduction to circuts and op-amps analisys and introduce canonic op-amp schematics. The last chapters cover specific areas in quite good depth. The book is available for free at the www.ti.com (reference number spold006b), so you can preview it before buying a paper version.

Very good - for what it is meant for
This book has a short 20 page introduction to horse behavior and language, and from there it continues in encyclopedia style, with lots of horse related items described in alphabetical order. Usually I don't like this type of book at all and avoid it, but this one was an exception. First, it is down to the point, no word is wasted! Yet it is very easy to read and understand. The other thing I liked very much is WHAT it says is very horsefriendly ("natural horsemanship" oriented), sounds very sensible and logical. There is a wealth of information for a very broad range of horse topics.
Of course, due to the nature (i.e. the form) of the book no one subject is treated very extensively. This means it is good only to get an overview over horsemanship related topics - but at this it is REALLY good!

Winners are Driven : A Champion's Guide to Success in Business & Life
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (16 April, 2004)
Author: Bobby Unser
Amazon base price: $11.87
List price: $16.95 (that's 30% off!)
Average review score:

Great book on winning in business and life (and racing)!
Bobby Unser was a very successful race car driver. This book shows that he always is a successful business man. Not being a racing fan, I wasn't too excited at first, but I enjoy reading motivational and self-improvement books, so I thought I'd check it out. Although I wouldn't say it turned me into a racing fan, I got to appreciate the scientific and sporting aspects of racing.

The advice given, although not earth-shattering, is both true and effective. For example, he talks about the desire to succeed and how this is a necessary "fuel" for winning. Many other self-development authors speak about this much as well. It is not anything new. However, He gives vivid examples from his racing career and from other anecdotes of friends and acquaintances. These examples are well-chosen because they are inspiring.

This is similar to other sections of his book. Bobby Unser seems to be very principle oriented as well as a man of integrity. He talk about instances where he could have turned his back on a commitment for monetary gain or to get on a better racing team (he made it seem like it was a somewhat common occurance in auto racing), but he stayed true to his commitment and it ended benefiting him in the end. This is refreshing considering some of the stereotypes of big business today where the search for a dollar seems to be the guiding principle sometimes.

I highly recommend this book. Even though it has a lot of auto racing stories, Unser tells them in a way that non-fans would really enjoy them and get motivation from their example.

Desire fuels the fire...
...and visions are meant to be shared.

Bobby's translation of what it takes to move from leading a race into the winner's circle to leading in business is an analogy well made in this book, particularly for all racing fans who find themselves wanting to gain a winning edge in life.

Paul Pease parlays Bobby Unser's winning focus in driving to be first for the checkered flag into a shared vision for his readers of what it takes to succeed in business. Bobby's lessons learned on the track and in between race days made him a part of one of America's most winning race families in a sport that has literally killed many who took on its challenges.

Bobby's experience in the business of racing and in the business of business in his twenty years of retirement, make him an excellent teacher of valuable lessons for the lay reader. The examples of lessons learned from his years of racing provide an entertaining and enlightening background for the reader to gain perspective on each message Bobby has to offer.

Bobby is clearly a monumental character both on the track and off. Being a willing teacher of what it takes to make a difference in business as in life makes this book very satisfying to the finish.

Unser takes the checkered flag, again!
I found Bobby's book to be not only a fun read, but also packed with great motivational tips. Applying the tips to racing really hit home and was great reinforcement. It was nice to read about someone who actually practices what they preach, and can then explain it so that others can benefit.
