Doris Day Her Own Story
I read this book many years ago. I was very touched by Doris Day's love for animals. I wrote a letter to her telling her how much I liked the book and how much happiness my own dog added to my life. I enclosed a picture of me laughing while my dog, Ginger, was licking my face. Doris actually wrote to me! She sent a postcard with a typed note on it. One line said: "Kiss Ginger on her nose for me." It was signed: Love, D.D. It was raining the day I got the card. A raindrop made one spot of the card blurry. However, from that point forward we have always referred to Doris Day as: "Ginger's Aunt Doris." Ginger is now gone, but the letter from Doris is a great part of her canine legacy.

What a Life
Doris Day didn't have the perfect life everyone thought she had.She was abused by one of her husbands, her son was almost killed by Charles Manson, and her Father married an Africa American Women, that Doris loved. This book is fantastic, and no stone is unturned.I wrote to Doris Day when I bought this book in 1975,and she wrote back a beutifull letter signed in Ink.I still have this note, and Cherish it with all my memories of Doris Days great films and music she has given us over the years.I think Doris did the right thing, retiring while she was still on top,and enjoying her life with her animals, and beutifull house in Carmel.

Doris Day Her Own Story
The book was written in a way that made you feel as if you were listening to her talk to you in your living room. I was surprised that her life was not as the girl next door, full of sweet and lovely living. Her being able to have such difficulties with the men in her life and still survive with compassion and enthusiasm shows how well grounded she is. What a wonderful person. This book was a great read and touched my heart.

Superb insight into Korean lifestyle.
Peace Under Heaven, by Ch'ae Man-Sik, is one of the most informative books in history to shed light on the lifestyle of Koreans under Japanese colonial rule. The story follows the trials and tribulations of Master Yun, a Korean rice dealer, whose role in society is influenced by these Japanese rulers. The book also gives creative insight into the roles of women in society, as well as information on the class system of Korea at the time. For all those interested in Asian history, I highly recommend this novel due to all the reasons mentioned.

A Korean Satire With Universal Impact
Chae Man-sik's Peace Under Heaven is a satire worthy of global attention. The story, which takes place in the short span of a few days, with occasional flashbacks, is claustrophobic. Most of the story occurs within the close confines of Korean houses, and efficiently illustrates the relationships in a yang ban family during the Japanese Occupation. Even in translation, the dialogue conveys the characters' materialistic greed, sensual decadence, and petty antagonisms. It's critical edge is directed at Koreans, not the Japanese.

The main character, Toad Yun, is an elderly, stingy, profane, lecherous landowner, who resides in the capital, far removed from his property. However, within the confines of his houses are numerous servants, daughters-in-law, grandsons, and concubines, all of whose machinations make the story profoundly hilarious. The main character should be loathsome, but the creatures around him and his past experiences make him believably human and pathetic. He is no better than his ..., indebted offspring and conniving servants and daughters-in-law, but the author manages to make the reader feel sorrier for him. There is a universal concern for inter-generational conflict and misunderstanding.

The narrative also has strong cultural and historical tones, mostly critical. The Yun family is presented as a mockery of traditional Confucian virtues and nearly traitorous. It depicts a period in Korean history little understood by non-Koreans. The translation, aided by a glossary of Korean terms, catches the spirit of the language, but is still a little too sanitized. The author treads a thin line between propriety and realism. This is more than a historical novel, and it is not necessary to know Korean history to appreciate it.

Sensitive & Reassuring for All Korean Adoptees
I bought this book for my Korean-born son who is now age 19. The letters in "I Wish for You a Beautiful Life" were written by birth mothers who had their babies in Ae Ran Won, a home for unwed mothers in Seoul and then gave them up for adoption. The letters written by these birth mothers and the records kept by Ae Ran Won will provide a link for Korean Adoptees to find their birth mothers later in life. This is not the case for my son as he was abandoned near a Police Box in Seoul in December 1982 at the age of 15 months. There is very little hope for abandoned children to find their birth mothers/families. That is why I feel this book can be so helpful for abandoned children. Since they can never know for certain, this book can provide some knowledge of background circumstances (cultural and personal) for unwed Korean birth mothers in general. Then, perhaps, these children can feel some measure of comfort in knowing that they were not "rejected" but will indeed be loved forever by their birth mothers. I read the book from cover to cover before presenting it to my son. I had to make three attempts to read it as I was overcome with tears each time. My son was touched to receive it and promised that he would read it during a quiet time when he can reflect on his emotions.

Moving stories of mothers needing to place their children...
You often wonder how people can 'give up' a beautiful child. This book has numerous letters from mothers who struggled with the decision to place their child, out of true love placed their child, and then suffered from the guilt of placing their child. There are truly some very moving letters in this book. You can just feel the level of guilt in these mother for 'abandoning' their children and sending them around the world. To really appreciate the mothers choices you really also need to read 'The Koreans'. This book explains the Korean Confucian culture and it helps you understand why these mothers did what they did. Happy reading.

I Wish for You a Beautiful Life
It took strength for these women to write these letters. It took strength for me to read them. But I recommend this book to everyone. I think we can all benefit from a few tears, a bit of new understanding, and an excersize in compassion. And please, donate some money to Ae Ran Won. They are struggling to do what's right in an unforgiving society. By buying this book you give a mother and her baby a home for a few nights.

Solid story
A good mix of hunter/hunted adventure, medical sf, and psi work. And one of the more interestng twists on psi powers even to this day. Nourse was a favorite author of mine, and his work still holds up all these years later.

An intriguing tale
still interesting after all this time. I first read Nourse as a young teenager and was taken with his style immediately. The plot is fast paced and is never labored, perfect for younger readers as well as adults, and, while not exceedingly profound, the story is interesting as well as thought-provoking.

Really Bad
I am a Marine veteran of the Korean War. This has to be the worst book that I have ever read. Really, really bad!!!!

A Solid Korean War Novel
The author takes you on a journey that tugs on the hearts of those that wish to forget and those that will always remember the Chosin Campaign of the Korean War. The author's insight into both Korean and American culture made this book both extremely believable and very enjoyable. I would encourage everyone from the Korean War Veteran to those that just enjoy a great read to buy the book. The "journey" I traveled as I read this book is unforgetable. Enjoy.

Cute, Very Simple, but Uneven
The author and illustrator do not seem to have decided who their audience is. I got this from a local bookstore to teach my kids some basic counting, but the tourist-y cover was pretty off-putting. The cover illustration shows two very brown children dressed in hula skirt and malo, and sewing flower leis, an unusual sight in realtime Hawaii. On the other hand, the typical American kitchen pictured, features a rice cooker next to the toaster, as well as a checkered bag of the local brand of bread, which are familiar sites to locals, but probably not what tourists envision as part of Hawaiian daily life. The traditional yellow school bus driving along a country road instead of the highway is incongruous, unless you do live in the country. But the picture of the tutu in her lace trimmed muumuu, surrounded by a mix of children, including a little towhead, is how we like to view the passing down of local culture. All this aside, this is a very elementary (one through ten only ) counting book. The illustrations cute and very colorful. And a rhyming song follows at the end, but it is written in a range that only sopranos and tenors would find comfortable. I`ve never heard a child sing a high "A" in everyday life.
