This book is a great introduction and overview of Beuys difficult and varied work. It contains many photos, which are enormously important to gain understanding of an artist whose work is frequently ephemeral and time based. There are also essays which touch on the myths surrounding Beuys, both of his own making and subsequent to his death. The relationship between this creating of a personal mythology and the materials he uses becomes evident.

Ethnicity's Revenge

Review Date: 2001-12-12
In this insightful survey of ethnicity in world politics the editors and contributors convincingly document the power of ethnicity in the post- cold war era. Ethnic groups as mobilizing forces between states, among states and societies, and within states across the globe highlight the book's theme of ethnic entanglements.Chapters by Stack, James, Copeland, and Croacher are especially well done.

Concise but thorough

This is certainly one of the better books of its type. Wegs and Ladrech have presented history in a lively, interesting style that manages to avoid a tendency to be dull or `dry'. The book follows a logical order from the end of World War 2 and the consequent rise of the Superpowers, through to the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe. All important aspects of this period are covered such as economic recovery in Western Europe, the end of the Eurocentric order, the Cold War, Eastern and Western European politics, post war society and the student riots of the 1960's. The final two chapters in the book cover culture and thought in Europe and a look toward the 21st century.
In the introduction, the authors freely state they have `favoured conciseness over excessive attention to detail'. In being concise however, the authors have merely avoided excessive, over detailed prose and have not omitted essential detail. This is a work that should prove invaluable to students of this era.

Aldcroft produces a comprehensive, detailed account of the European Economy, which is in tune with his status as one of the leading Economic Historians of modern times. This book is aimed at the undergraduate and post-graduate students of this era.
Immmensely detailed and statistical, Aldcroft provides expert explanation and theory to events. Also included is a full and detailed Bibliography for further reading and research.

Not For Casual BEATLES Fan

For those really into collecting, this is for you. "Every Little Thing" contains highly detailed information about final mixes and compares subtle differences between stereo and mono releases. Much of THE BEATLES mono catalog is not just two channels mixed down to one. They are separate and distinctive mixes. Whether it might be a different word sung or a slightly different guitar riff, this book breaks it down for you and tells you where these gems can be located.
For instance: "She's A Woman" has a four-beat count off by Paul in a more uncommonly heard stereo mix. In the final verse of "Your Mother Should Know" the vocal and percussion tracks were electronically phased in mono; in stereo, everything was mixed flat. The original mono version of "Revolution" is heavily compressed and has John's guitar mixed way up. The stereo mix has the instruments really separated losing a lot of the power punch as originally intended. Too detailed for most?
Probably. But if you're like me and find any slight variation of a BEATLES tune to be exciting, I think you'll love this book.

Current events and social changes spring to life

Peter Laufer's Exodus To Berlin covers the aftermath of the Holocaust, when the small Jewish community left in Germany faced the fall of the Berlin Wall and the possibility of a new life in a democratic country. This tells of the story of their migration to Germany, the newfound appearance of Jewish peoples in Germany, and the odd idea that modern Jews are finding sanctuary in Germany from the anti-Semitism of the former Soviet Republic. Current events and social changes spring to life in this eye-opening coverage.

Superb Reporting

Review Date: 2004-02-26
Margaret Edds does a superb job of telling the story of how an innocent man, Earl Washington, was put on Virginia's death row and ended up spending 18 years in prison. I know she does a superb job because some years ago, when Washington had still not been pardoned but when things were looking hopeful, I researched this case and wrote a series of articles about it in the Culpeper News, the small-town paper in the town where Washington had been tried and convicted in January 1984.

Edds is a professional reporter and writes like one, with very little commentary on the facts. As a result, the facts speak very powerfully for themselves. And what commentary Edds does offer I agree with. But I would quibble a bit. The main point she tries to make is that the errors made in this case were not unusual but a part of the system, that while a series of extremely lucky circumstances led to Washington's exoneration, there are likely many innocents who will never be freed. So far, I agree. But Edds also suggests that no one did anything really egregiously wrong, that everyone just did their job in a flawed system and the result was tragic.

I beg to differ. Earl Washington was set up by the cruel and dishonest acts of the police and prosecutors. One of the policemen responsible for what happened in 1983 and 1984 is currently Sheriff of Culpeper, and Edds goes very easy on him. Read my articles and Edds' book and see what you think.

Yes, we need to reform the system, but we also need to hold individuals responsible, and ultimately this book has that effect. A brilliant job of reporting!
