I am planning a trip to Africa and have scoured many bookstores and shelves for THE BOOK. Footprints provides a wonderful
book for those who really want to know EVERYTHING in preparation for their trip--from tipping guides to safari ratings to
hotel guides to crime and embassy information--ad infinitim. This book is wealth of practical information and provides maps,
history, culture and language information and even has a built in glossy color wildlife section on the flora and fauna one
will encounter whilst in East Africa. Having a comprehensive guide in a small package (~6x4 in) is essential since travellers
are limited to backage weight restrictions. (Books taken are thusly limited). This book will provides excellent reading
material (as well as a travel resource) for all things East African before, during and after travel. Restaurants and hotels
are rated by $ and quality, as are safari companies. Each page is double columned in small print, absolutely LOADED with
essential information. The version offered for 1999 has a hardbinding, which is a plus. Unfortuantely, all post-1999 Footprint
editions are now softcover. If you can take only one book, this is it. This one will be one of two books in my bag. The
other one will be Hemingway's 'Green Hills of Africa.'

College-level collections strong on socialist and economic systems will welcome this historical review of socialist economic
post WWII. It analyzes the major points of socialistic economics, from profit and growth to consumption, labor, pricing and
banking, offering a comprehensive survey of the economics of formerly communist regimes and economic systems. It's a comprehensive
survey suitable for classroom discussion at the college level.

This book is an excellent source to bring with you to battle against pushy used car salesmen. When they won't give you a
price, and ask you how much you think you'd spend for it, this book will tell you exactly how much you should. Also, with
an itemized list of accessories and their values, you can quickly tabulate the overall value for the car. Most importantly,
at the end of the book there is a mileage adjustment chart so you can add or subtract from the value of the car based on
the mileage. An invaluable resource.

This book is a lovely review of Japan's unique designer Eiko Ishioka. She is probably best known for her work on the movies
"Bram Stoker's Dracula" and "The Cell". This book contains some of her best work pre-Dracula, including an amazing poster
for "Apocalypse Now", unique advertisments for the fashion label Parco, many illustrations and stage productions. The book
itself is in very large format, heavy paper and the printing is bright and crisp, the better to display these works of art.

Gosh-darn purty!

This book is full of gorgeous black-and-white photographs from all over the West in the 1940s. Central New Mexico is here--including
the Canoncito Church near Santa Fe, Madrid, the La Bajada ruins, and the town and mines of Cerrillos--and so is White Sands,
New Mexico, and southern Utah, and the mining towns of Colorado.
Many of the places photographed are in ruins, and the black-and-white coloration serves to make them even more desolate, dryer, dustier, bleaker. Sometimes the photos are of wide expanses; oftentimes they're of small details like where the rusted hook of an old door has carved a circle around it, from years of use once upon a time.
This book also has a good autobiographical essay by the photographer that serves as an introduction, and the book itself is a terrific historical record of the West, and a great photo collection for any coffee table in need of a conversation piece. I first saw it at a friend's house, and knew I had to get a copy for myself.

Patrick Pearse: The Man
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.

Review Date: 2006-07-03
This 1977 biography has been reissued this year, the 90th anniversary of the Rising, in its original form. It is difficult
to imagine a subject for a biography which would be more capable of stiring controversy. It is also difficult to imagine an
author taking a more reasoned, scholarly, and evenhanded approach to their subject.
This biography manages to humanize a man who is often reduced, in character and deed,to a faceless political icon. The book is thorough in relating his work in the Gaelic League, his writings, his tenure as a schoolmaster, and the development of his political philosophy and activism.
Finally, the book allows the reader a firm basis with which to independently evaluate Pearse the man. This is not to say that the work is inchoate, for the very title itself, The Triumph of Failure, reveals a steely frame upon which the facts are sculpted. By this it is meant that the book breathes life into a subject whose reality is given fair treatment rather than obscured by an ideological or euhemeristic approach.
The author notes in the 2006 preface that she has been constantly in controversy with those who use or condone the use of violence to accomplish political ends. The author does make judgments about Pearse with respect to his character and the Rising. She notes that Pearse was an exponent "...of a romantic morality which sanctined the the sacrafice of self and others in the pursuit of self-realization." It is clear that the Rising was in the author's eyes an undemocratic insurrection.
It is also clear that the author has attempted, and in my view successfully, to produce a balance and fair biography of Pearse the man which in some respects must be fairly described as sympathetic.
It is well worth the time and it is written in a clear and reader-friendly style.

Unlike most of the rah-rah books published in the HR area, this book is based on real research in Japanese and American companies.
I don't agree with all of it, but it is interesting, insightful, and original. I would urge all HR professionals, corporate
or consultant, to have a look at this book and see what we can (still) learn from the Japanese.

If you're looking for different organizations in your area, look no further than the Encyclopedia of Associations. I was
on a mission to find listings of non-profits in the Chicago area and I couldn't find anyone with a comprehensive list until
I found this book at Amazon.com. The book is broken down by state and then by city so it is very easy to find what you
are looking for. And as an additional bonus, the local chapter of national organizations like the American Heart Assoc.
and American Lung Assoc. were also listed. A definite must have!
