A window into another world -- and another soul.Review Date: 2001-06-11
The reader gets an amazing opportunity to see the world through the eyes of a young Arab man. We walk with the boy through the life in a backwards village that is full of medieval feuds, and is soaked in ancient traditions. We follow the teenager as his quest to fight injustice brings him right into a dangerous and highly politicized war. Finally, we see a tired man looking back at his old self, and trying to make sense out of his own life.
Even though I couldn't disagree more with the protagonist's political goals, I could not help but sympathize with him. It is rare to find a book that can show readers that underneath many actions lie simply the emotions of frustrated young people.

A review from the Disabled Skater HimselfReview Date: 2004-09-30
I hope all you Canadian skaters out there enjoy this book. I know I do! Why, you ask? Cause I am in it! No joke. That's right, my name is Eric Franks (AKA The Disabled Skater). I still skate 7 years after the photo, and interview. It was by far, one of the best days of my life... The picture of me holding my REAL Keith Hufanegal Deck, standing in my walker (four-wheeled type contraption) was taken at Yuba City Skatepark, in Yuba City, California (U.S.A.), in April, of 98. I was there with my mom, (Lynne) and my two good friends: Jason and Gerald Lifur.
As it happened, I was just cruising around,
and, Sonny Mayiugba (aka SM) noticed me, and came up to me asking, "do you mind if I take some pictures of you skating, and
do an interview..." of course, I said yes! But, he also had to ask my mom. (cause I was under age at the time) Anyway, he
actually took a pic of me skating up the side of a pyramid (at the park). The pic of me on the ramp was not published in the
DOI? (For whatever reason). The pic of me actually skating is found in the magazine though. I think you can still get a copy
of the issue via www.heckler.com or possibly EBAY, if they don't send you one? (for whatever reason)
Anyway, after about
20 minutes, he said, " look for yourself in next month's issue." Which was the actual magazine of Heckler. It was May 1998's
issue (AKA The Simple Issue) Issue # 26 . I was so stoked, when later in May, I went to a skate shop called Zumiez, and found
a copy.
Then, about a year ago, one of my friends, who owns a skateshop in California, called Unity, told me I was in this book! Then he went and showed me. Since then I have autographed a half dozen copies! I don't know how easy it is to get a copy in Canada? But in the U.S. you have to usually order it. I had to. Heckler never sent me any copy of the mag, or book. Lastly, all the other skaters, snowboarders, bands, many of whom I looked up to (and still do) are awsomely profiled in this book, such as Metallica, Ian Mackaye of Minor Threat (R.I.P.) and the still together, Fugazi, also appearances by: Green Day, Public Enemy, Tony Hawk, Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Duane Peters (of the band: U.S. Bombs) Steve Caballero, Christian Hasoi, and tons more! As always, keep on doing what you love, and do it the best you can.
Live to skate
Until next time, eh!
Yours truly in everything skating, love, unity, and Canadian,
Eric N. Franks

What other people say:
Amid the many discussions of the impact of globalization on national
economies and corporate networks, there are surprisingly few studies
that provide detailed empirical analyses. This well-written book by
Eelke Heemskerk is remarkable in providing a longitudinal study of the
ties among Dutch corporations and their managers and the relation of
these ties to important social questions regarding governance and
compensation. Heemskerk looks at the grain of sand of Holland and
arrives thoughtfully at a diagnosis of the corporate changes found today
in many advanced and emerging economies. The care to position Holland
relative to the studies of other countries makes the book an excellent
reference.

Through comprehensive analyses of the Dutch corporate board network
over time, as well as interviews with many of the key players,
Heemskerk explains how the old community fell apart, and along the
way provides an insightful account of how economic elite structures
evolve due to internal and external pressures."

When Dr. Jerry C. Lee announced that he was leaving the university, many students and faculty felt that this would be their year. Because the Gallaudet administration had consisted mainly of hearing people, these dissenters felt that they were being condescended to.
Not only was the sole hearing candidate Elizabeth Zinser picked, but critical snafus undercut her very brief administration. Then-board chair Jane Spilman allegedly said that 'deaf people are not able to function in a hearing world' ironically reinforcing the protestor cause. Zinser's academic training in rehabilitative sciences hinted at the 'medical model' of disability which many of the students found outmoded and problematic.
The students recieved national media attention, alumni (including the use of the alumni house as an organizing space) and Congressional support. He had initially given his own support to Zinser in an attempt to forge campus unity, but the other presidential candidate, I. King Jordan (then Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences) withdrew his support. Zinser subsequently announced her resignation. Jordan became Gallaudet's first deaf president.
The DPN is an inspiring saga for anybody (particularly college students attempting to create their own campus chage). The actions of Gallaudet students later inspired me to challenge patronizing assumptions being made about my own community.
