1990 Books

I bought this book simply for the list of potential employers it contains and found it to be a great resource for browsing employers in different categories. It contains web addresses, street addresses, short descriptions of what the company does, and all the companies are divided into different categories such as "Accounting and Management Consulting" or "Real Estate".

The only part that I found to be a joke is at the very beginning, concerning how to conduct a job search. The instructions are so general that they are useless and the cover letter and resume examples are only mildly useful. More importantly, information like that is already readily available in better and more detailed format on the internet, so they could really have just saved some paper and left this part out.

The bottom line is that this book is a crucial reference guide for companies you could be applying to that you didn't even know existed until you got this book. Since it narrows things down to one metropolitan area instead of a region or the nation as a whole, it allows the author to list even more employers for this specific city and with even more detail.

A must have if you are doing a focused job search!

The author of this book has done a marvellous job in analysing the dramatic changes in China's legal system in the era of Deng Xiaoping. The period covered by this book is of immense historical and economical importance to modern China and the author has done the legal aspects of which full justice.

A useful and rather technical discussion of the early Arabic Christian encounter with Islam. The book description already given covers the bases, but it should be noted that this is not useful for someone who is neither a polyglot nor an advanced reader in this area of study.

Other useful books in this regard are Cragg's "Muhammad and the Christian", "Paths to the Heart" edited by Cutsinger is very useful if you have an interest in Sufism and Eastern Orthodoxy, Bell's "The Origin of Islam in Its Christian Environment", Daniel Sahas' "John of Damascus on Islam: The Heresy of the Ishmaelites", and Stockle's "The Doctrine of Islam and Christian Belief".

I also enjoyed "The Prophet and the Messiah: An Arab Christian's Perspective in Islam and Christianity" by Chawkat Moucarry.

One little observation is that many books of this sort approach Islam from the Protestant theological tradition. In many ways this seems to be useful since the majority of Protestants and all true Muslims hold a "Quranic" notion of the Book. That is, it is literal and intact as given. In Christian terms, this means that functionally most Protestants have zero conception of how the New Testament was formed from the liturgical heart of the Church, and not vice versa. So in this way the Protestant doctrine of sola scriptura (bible alone) has a false bond with Islam on a textual level. It should be noted, however, that when speaking with Moslems it needs to be remembered that their equivalent to Jesus Christ incarnate of Mary as God is not Muhammad, but the Qur'ân. We have an incarnated God, they have an "inscripturated" God. That said, the Moucarry book is quite useful as well.

The author vividly captures some of the social ills which characterized the autocratic regime of Samuel Doe which eventually led to the bloodbath which decimated Liberia. An excellent read for anyone who wishes to understand the collusion between the African Christian church and some autocratic regimes in Africa.

This book provides a very comprehensive information regarding the two great architecture done by Tadao Ando. After reading this book you will have a through understanding about the concept and the design development of the two architecture. There are a lot of nice pictures and drawings also. It is worth to be a collectable item for every person who love architecture.

In Cinema Today, author and movie historian Edward Buscombe explores the cinematic history, films, people, and technologies of movie making from 1970 to the present day. Beginning with the rise of the blockbuster in the early 1970s, Buscombe shows how a string of spectacularly successful films such as MASH (1970); The Godfather (1972); and Jaws (1975) transformed the economic climate of Hollywood and the evolution of how movies were made, distributed, and marketed. He examines the Reserves as essential to the All-Volunteer Total Force, and in the context of politics, outside of which the policies cannot be understood. Of particular note is his discussion of the unfortunate roundout brigades, which were activated but not deployed for the Gulf War, and the implications for future operations.
Finally, the author provides some observations, cautions, and recommendations, and concludes "Only if we are wise in our reliance upon our citizen warriors,can we be assured that in the future, as in the past, they will immediately respond to the war tocsin when new dangers arrive".

Robert Barnard is the best mystery writer I have ever read (and I read a lot). This book is one of his best. His prose is crisp, erudite but never pretentious. There are always many plot twists is his books. But the most AMAZING FEATURE about his mysteries is that by the time he tells you who done it, you've met so many interesting, quirky characters along the way, you don't really care who done it.

Truly a 5 star book for genealogical work! My copy is extremely worn. The *MOST* used book on my genealogical shelf! I think I paid $14.95 for mine back in 1990. Will help you to match U.S. cities to their corresponding counties. Quickly access basic information about every U.S. county, county seat, principal city, and lists cities of 100 or more people. You can look up and cross reference information by state, county, or city. If you are always wondering what county a city is in, get ahold of a copy of this book!

Clark's book is an excellent and thoroughly researched history of the little know civil resistance movement in Kosovo that sprang up in the early 1990s until war broke out in 1998. Clark's research is impeccable (much of it first hand) and this piece is a must read for anyone trying to get a more thorough understanding of this conflict.
