Che living in Cuba in 1997 and Now!

Che lives in the Cuban revolution. If you don't believe it read this book that contains articles on Cuba reprinted from the Militant newspaper in 1997, the 30th year after Che was murdered in Bolivia. They are mostly interviews with Cuban revolutionists, summarizes of debates in Cuba, and speeches and writing about Che by his comrades, his friends, and by his daughter. They show how Cuba's communist leaders aim to continue and deepen the revolutionary struggle for socialism Che led. Whether it is the interviews with Pombo and others fought alongside Che in Cuba, Africa, and Bolivia, or the speeches by Cuban communist leaders on why they reject the Soviet model of socialism and why they continue to fight for revolutionary communism, this is an inspiring historic collection of documents and reports.

Former Algerian President's Ahmed Ben Bella's article from Le Monde Diplomatique about Che and Cuba's collaboration with the Algerian and African revolutions is worth the whole price of this book by itself. The Analysis of the complexity behind the enlargement of NATO into Central Europe couldn't be better presented. Gardner is an expert in the subject matter and has remarkable knowledge. I have personally learned a lot by reading his books, each peace of work presented by Gardner is unique and brilliantly written. All I can say it that I highly recommend buying this book to whoever has a thirst for an accurate, deep and realistic picture of Central and South Eastern Europe following the enlargement of NATO Which is affecting each and everyone of us in both a positive and a negative manner. Moreover, I would recommend buying "Surviving the Millennium" and Dangerous Cross Roads" by the same Author. Thank you Hall Gardner for sharing your knowledge so eloquently.

Good book for perspective, some flaws in the facts

This book contains a selection of essays from various role-players in the Angolan/South African conflict, including the famous essay by Nobel Prize-winner, Gabriel Garcia Marquez "Operation Carlota", and a few of "Fidel Castro's" speeches.

While a lot of this is propaganda, it at least gives an impression of the war from the Cuban and Angolan perspective.

This book needs to be read in conjunction with one of the books written from the South African perpective, such as the one by Fred Bridgland "The War for Africa" and others, and you need to draw your own conclusions.

The human suffering that this war generated, is still a legacy of the Southern African Continent, with the issue of the remaining landmines bringing this issue to the attention of the media once again, particularly with the visit of Lady Diana just recently.

For anyone who wishes to gain a balanced view of the progress of the war, as well as some of it's roots, this book is one of the key elements to garnering that information.

All schools should use the system described here.

Review Date: 2003-04-28
In 1989, Chicago began an experiment with radical decentralization of power and authority. This book tells the story of what happened to Chicago's elementary schools in the first four years of this reform. Implicit in this reform is the theory that expanded local democratic participation would stimulate organizational change within schools, which in turn would foster improved teaching and learning. Using this theory as a framework, the authors marshal massive quantitative and qualitative data to examine how the reform actually unfolded at the school level. With longitudinal case study data on 22 schools, survey responses from principals and teachers in 269 schools, and supplementary system-wide administrative data, the authors identify four types of school politics: strong democracy, consolidated principal power, maintenance, and adversarial. In addition, they classify school change efforts as either systemic or unfocused. Bringing these strands together, the authors determine that, in about a third of the schools, expanded local democratic participation served as a strong lever for introducing systemic change focused on improved instruction. Finally, case studies of six actively restructuring schools illustrate how under decentralization the principal's role is recast, social support for change can grow, and ideas and information from external sources are brought to bear on school change initiatives. Few studies intertwine so completely extensive narratives and rigorous quantitative analyses. The result is a complex picture of the Chicago reform that joins the politics of local control to school change. This volume is intended for scholars in the fields of urban education, public policy, sociology of education, anthropology of education, and politics of education. Comprehensive and descriptive, it is an engaging text for graduate students and upper-level undergraduates. Local, state, and federal policymakers who are concerned with urban education will find new and insightful material. The book should be on reading lists and in professional development seminars for school principals who want to garner community support for change and for school community leaders who want more responsive local institutions. Finally, educators, administrators, and activists in Chicago will appreciate this detailed analysis of the early years of reform.

A singularly compelling visual glimpse into the heart and aftermath of tragedy.

Written by prizewinning journalist Igor Kostin, who braved severe radiation to take the only existing photograph of the Chernobyl plant on the day of its catastrophic destruction, Chernobyl: Confessions of a Reporter is a compilation of black-and-white and color photographs that Kostin continued to take for twenty years of the plant, the forbidden zone surrounding it, and the people who worked there. For the first time, Kostin presents Chernobyl's story in words as well as pictures, yet it is the photographs that utterly dominate Chernobyl: Confessions of a Reporter, captured images ranging from men transporting radioactive blocks with their naked hands to the evacuation of villages and the construction of the sacrophagus. A singularly compelling visual glimpse into the heart and aftermath of tragedy.

This is a great book for the student. Imagine if Capablanca could really write and put things into simple terms that the reader could understand. That is what we have here, as Karpov writes from his throne in the days when his supremacy was absolute. But he never suffered from the arrogance (at least in his writing) that plagues the literature of Capablanca and Kasparov. He tells the story of a game objectively, but chock full of high quality advice. Karpov is the best guy to study, as his games shimmer with clarity, and you can emulate his opening style. Plus, he is a modern player who studies hard, so his openings are not occasionally ridiculous, as was Capablanca's, for instance, in the first game of his disastrous match with Alekhine. He never seeks complications, but always plays solid moves from which tactics logically arise. This is a great, great book. You should certainly buy it. I also own How Karpov Wins by Mednis, Karpov's Best Games by Karpov and the 1976 collection of his games by O'Connell and Adams. I think this is the most valuable of all of them. He was at his peak and most eager to talk, and he knew he would have a legacy.

I bought this book simply for the list of potential employers it contains and found it to be a great resource for browsing employers in different categories. It contains web addresses, street addresses, short descriptions of what the company does, and all the companies are divided into different categories such as "Accounting and Management Consulting" or "Real Estate".

The only part that I found to be a joke is at the very beginning, concerning how to conduct a job search. The instructions are so general that they are useless and the cover letter and resume examples are only mildly useful. More importantly, information like that is already readily available in better and more detailed format on the internet, so they could really have just saved some paper and left this part out.

The bottom line is that this book is a crucial reference guide for companies you could be applying to that you didn't even know existed until you got this book. Since it narrows things down to one metropolitan area instead of a region or the nation as a whole, it allows the author to list even more employers for this specific city and with even more detail.

A must have if you are doing a focused job search!
