"Before Edward Hopper came along, the convention in American landscape painting was to romanticize one's subject. Hopper (1882-1967) broke that law: telephone poles and power lines, peeling paint and utilitarian structures are prominent and even dramatic elements in his work. But light, whether straight from a blue Maine sky or filtered by big-city particulates, is consistently a major feature of Hopper's paintings. Presented here are Early Sunday Morning, Cape Cod Sunset, Seven A.M., and the surprising Soir Bleu. ¶ 13 x 12" wall calendar (opens to 13 x 24") with twelve full-color reproductions. Shooting down the excuses for the Gulf War
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-04
Ten years after its publication, this slim volume stands up to the test of time. The essays, all written prior to the beginning of the Gulf War, soberly examine the rationales and likely outcomes of the then unfought conflict. Then-president Bush's "New World Order", the use of threats to the oil market as a rationale for the war, and long term problems in the mid-east are all critically dissected and little justification is found for military intervention.

Possibly the most interesting part of the book is the essays on the oil supply. A pro-war administration and its pundit allies in the press predicted sky high prices if America didn't strike against "naked aggression." An excellent case is made in "A War for Oil?" that no such thing would have occurred and the fact that oil prices have continued to decline over the past ten years, even with the restricted output and other disruptions in the oil supply, helps put the lie to such wild claims.

This book is an essential addition to the library of anyone interested in critiques of America's foreign policy and especially to those who are concerned with the tendency of the U.S. to intervene militarily abroad.

An incredibly fine documentation of the work of two amazing conceptual artists whose work was devoted to exploring the basics of American life and history and exploding them into amazing works that forced one to look at the American world in new and engaging ways. Every project was the result of faithful research, interaction with the community, respect for tradition and their own personal contributions to the community at large.

The quality of the publication itself is a monument to Mel and Kate's work. Tang and MIT are to be lauded for their accomplishment.

America's Phone Book is a fantastic resource for anyone trying to track down a company, government agency or educational institution. It's a pity that General Information, Inc's ARCO division decided not to print any new editions after the first. At $24.95 (1n 1989) it was a terrific value.

Wonderful, diverse book

This book is a great resource for ideas on corporate identity design. It covers such diverse categories as identity programs, package design, letterheads, manuals, signage/environmental graphics, brochures, and logos. I like this book because it covers such a wide range of applications for graphic design. Each section (for instance, package design) has lots of examples of work. It's obvious that this book is intended as a source of inspiration for visual and conceptual ideas. There is not one word of explanatory text in the entire book. It doesn't tell you anything about the process each designer went through, nor does it talk about the history of design. It's simply a collection of the best corporate identity design work of about 400 U.S. design firms. The book has a very simple, clean layout and nice photos. My favorite sections are the package designs(many diverse types of products are shown) and the logos(tons of examples). I highly recommend this book, even though it has no text.

This is a fantastic book. Very few critics have the courage or the eyeball power to do what Kathryn Hume has done--offer a genuinely thorough discussion of the landscape of American fiction since 1960--over 100 books discussed. Anyone who wants to educate her/himself on postwar fiction ought to get a copy of this wonderfully written book. No creepy academic jargon, lots of intelligent comparison. Also, Hume offers a politically progressive review but is never (pinch my nose) politically correct.

A scathing critique of normative lyric practices of subjectivity and the workshop anthologies and pedagogies that have emerged to enforce them since the US era of R Lowell. Preternaturally learned, wry, masochistic, amusing throughout.

A great guide to recent history

Thomas Henriksen, the author of American Power after the Berlin Wall, surveys the projection of U.S. power abroad from the Soviet army's last parade across Red Square through the U.S. occupation of Iraq. The book covers the presidencies of George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush through the 2006 congressional elections and the beginning of the troop surge in Iraq. The author concentrates on America's international actions, especially the forceful interventions from Panama through the Iraq War. Non-interventions, such as the failure to stave off genocide in Rwanda, are touched on, too. This book is a very good historial account of U.S. foreign relationas, regime changes, and conflicts.

This compact book really covers a lot of ground, capturing the good, the bad, and the ugly of U.S. international affairs during nearly a twenty-year span. While the book is critical of George W. Bush in spreading democracy by military occupation in Afghanistan and Iraq, it is not heavy-handed in this theme. It provides an alternative viewpoint, or at least an explanation, of why the White House came around to promoting democracy with tanks. Thus, I felt informed and not hammered by a repeated theme from the first to the last paragraph. The writing is lively, with a good turn of phrase from time to time. It is a much better book then I thought from judging by the somewhat academic title.
