Outdated editions are valuable tools

I own every edition of Writer's Market (WM) from 1997 on (which was the year I first discovered these jewels), and I'm dying to get my hands on the new Writer's Market 2001 "Internet Edition" (Sep 2000).

The power these guides offer depends on how thorough of a market search you are forced into conducting when you first start out as a freelance writer. If you run into a market that does not provide enough guideline information -- in a current edition -- if you have older WM edition(s), you can look back to see what the deal is. This can be especially important if you run into a magazine that you believe might be one of the few you are going to be able to break in to.

For example, I discovered a number of incredibly good ideas for children's stories that would fit perfectly within the pages of "Ranger Rick" magazine (National Wildlife Federation).

The WM 2000 CD-ROM listed an editor, but very limited contact info and guidelines (as in NO guidelines):

(Ranger Rick is) "40% freelance written. Monthly magazine for children from ages 7-12, with the greatest concentration in the 7-10 age bracket. *Because of a backup in submissions, the editorial staff at Ranger Rick is not accepting queries or unsolicited manuscripts until further notice."

Ouch! What to do? I looked in in older WMs to see how long Ranger Rick had been having a "backup in submissions." WM 99 listed full writers guidelines and pay-info and well, I'm waiting to see whether Ranger Rick editors like my ideas or if they're going to toss them because of a "backup in submissions." :-)

Philippe Glade's spectacular images,in this weekly engangement calendar, bring fantastic pleasure in the simple grace and beauty found in flowers. Each week reveals botanical images, such as a stem, stamin or petal; brought in focus in a colorful and glorious "brilliance". Perhaps it's not so much the focus but the vibrance of color surrounding the cental point which is equally spendid.

Nobody writes like Allen Abel!

Allen Abel is one of the world's great travel writers. An expatriate New Yorker who's lived in Toronto for 25 years, he's reported for major Canadian papers and the CBC network from over 100 countries. I've been a devoted fan of his ever since he first
emerged as a sports writer in the '70s and have followed him from
Beijing to Brooklyn, Nova Scotia to New Guinea, and Turkey to Timbuktu. Wherever Abel is, you can always count on the most obscure, off-beat, and unusual experiences- and he's funny as hell too. Nobody, but nobody, writes like Allen Abel! It's a crime that most Americans don't know him. Pick this up and see why he's worth it.

These group of essays methodically and from a variety of view points attempt to show just how damaging the infamous photos and the acts of depravity they have exposed are. The book also explores the collective conscience and political climate that has existed in order for such unbelievable and inhuman behavior to occur. Highly recommended.

Superb! The Iron Lady's Ambassador to Moscow.
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-23
This was a wonderful book! Fresh, fast-paced, fascinating and immensely funny. The author was Maggie Thatcher's man in Moscow, he has an intimate knowledge of the Russian people and a great deal of experience in-country. His English humor (humour?) makes this book not just a chronicle of events, but a real gem. Examples...when visiting Kiev, he is invited to visit the musuem of UFO's which includes an exhibit of foot long iron bar munching rats from outer space, Ambasador Braithwaite dryly comments that although he would love to attend, he just can't seem to fit it into his schedule. When Moscow Radio plays excerpts from Pushkin in the throes of the 1991 aborted coup, he comments--who else but the Russians would air poetry at such a time? About half the length of Jack Matlock's epic "Anatomy on an Empire", (his colleague and apparent twin in the minds of the Russian people) Braithwaite's book is more accesible, and given in a lively style. While I do not agree 100% with all of his analysis, I do find this a supberb book and a must have for anyone who wants a Westerner's guide to understanding Russia.

This is a nice introduction to various schemes to stabilize the oil market. It critically examines some "bad" approaches, and then proposes a market-based solution drawing on the theory of commodity price stabilization and the use of financial instruments to neutralize the impact of commodity price volatility. The author manages to combine intellectually rigorous analysis and detailed institutional knowledge of the oil market into a readable volume.

REAL thinking about astrology
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-20
Most students and practitioners of astrology squeam and squirm when you begin to inquire as to the scientific basis for astrological claims. The slicker cons of the art will fall back on the old standard, "the stars incline, they do not compel". This book blasts beyond such muddle-minded fuddiness and TAKES ASTROLOGY SERIOUSLY. It asks the question, "If astrological claims have any validity, how can we know, and what evidence exists to support such?" AND LEST YOU THINK the authors are biased against astrology, you would not feel surprised to discover that the authors agree that some of the best evidence available seems to support what some call "The Mars Effect". Sure, they conclude that this effect stands alone as valid among astrological claims to date: meaning everything ELSE in astrology has no statistical support whatsoever. But if you want to read a book that only tells you what you wanted to hear, you might as well look back to the stars.

NOTICE that this book does NOT enter into extended speculation about HOW the stars can or CANNOT effect or reflect human forces; it does not conclude that NO astrological model COULD EVER indicate influences on human events. IT ONLY concludes that MOST of the models currently in use SHOW ABSOLUTELY NO STATISTICAL RELEVANCE in predicting anything about anything, except for the Mars effect.
