This is another great work by William H. Miller. Excellent choice of photographs throughout. Lots of unique ships - both exterior and interior shots. It's very interesting to compare the various ship designs and how the vessels were renamed, rebuilt, lengthened, etc. Get a copy if you can.

This boom is a must for any cruise ship lover. See the beginnings of the cruise ship era with ships like the Canberra and QE2, before seeing the modern RCCLs. Miller does another great job with this one with not only the pictures, and stats, but also the facts.

Montessori Resources - All in one package

What stands out about this book are the reviews of each product or organization mentioned. I appreicated knowing that someone had actually taken the time to look at all of the products and other resources out there and select the ones most beneficial to the school teacher using Montessori. Although, I know many home schoolers looking for curriculum and educational supplies will find the book to be useful as well, this guide is very helpful if you are just beginning to purchase supplies for a school and need information.

The book is divided into chapters according to subjects like art, foreign language, math and language, but there are special sections for practical life exercises and organizations too.

My husband and I will be opening our school in September, and the book helped us select the materials we needed quickly and efficiently.

The review of the different websites was helpful too.

As one who is helping set up the learning environment for a
Montessori school, I really didn't know where to begin. As a teacher, I know what materials have worked for the students I have worked with. However, being limited to just working with children at the 3 -6 level, I really didn't have appropriate recommendiations for the other grade levels.

My colleagues and I looked at several vendors, but the choices can really be overwhelming. We needed a source where we could read and receive some objective feedback as to what we needed for our situation. We found the answers to many of our questions in the Montessori Resources book.

We received our copy about two weeks ago, and it has been read by two of my colleagues who have also found the reviews to be useful as we try to decide what to purchase. We have been allocated just so much money to spend for furniture and supplies. Because our budget is so limited, we can't really afford to make costly mistakes.

The time that went into the reviewing and the organized way in which the reviews are presented are what stands out most in my mind about this book. We are in the process of contacting the companies, and feel that we can really make some informed decisions.

I learned about many new products that I didn't even realize were out there, and I can see that we will be able to afford a few of these and use them in the classroom as well. I also appreciated all of the free resources - many of which I didn't even know existed.

Mosby's 1999-2000 Medical Drug Reference is a MUST HAVE for the Medical Transcriptionist. I have found it, by far, to have the most up-to-date drug references available, which enables me to complete the tasks-at-hand more efficiently.

Murray on Contracts, Third Edition, 1990

Concretes the abstract
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-24
For those of you in your first-year, you have (will have) undoubtedly discovered the abstract nature of contract law. Unsettling for many is the fact that casebooks, while providing application, don't do much for reinforcing the concepts applied in the cases. For assistance, I happily recommend this volume.

Murray on Contracts appears at first glance to be a daunting volume, thick and detailed. It is however very well organized and divided, permitting a student to find more substance in those areas currently causing the student trouble. The volume also thoroughly provides the relevant citations for opinions that apply the concepts Murray explains. Indeed, after some limited review, I was quite happy for the detail that initially scared me.

To provide concrete and articulate discussion to the abstract world of contracts, this is proper volume. I do however encourage students to search it out in their respective law libraries before purchasing it. Again, with limited review, I think you will be pleased, finding a new ally in the seemingly insurmountable first-year war of contracts.

Murray On Contracts: a priceless study of contract law
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-25
Professor Murray has created a masterful volume cogently and concisely providing the principles of contract law. Murray on Contracts is a must read for any law student, practitioner, or business person seriously interested in a complete study of contract law. This volume contains abundant citations to case law and legal commentary that is valuable to any practitioner analyzing the state of a principle of contract law in his or her jurisdiction. In addition, Murray's lucid and facile style allows the layman and lawyer alike to learn the principles of contract law with pleasure and insight. This is a great contrast to the overly pedantic style of many academic commentators in various courses of study. In short, Murray on Contracts does what few other volumes of its kind can do: make a volume of complex and arcane legal principles read like an engrossing novel.

Mary Kalamaras was the in-house STC editor not the author. Please correct. I wanted, when planning the publication of this book, to publish an exciting and riveting history of the space program. I wanted to illustrate it with the extraordinary art collection that NASA has been building from its inception, inviting artists from Robert Rauschenberg to Norman Rockwell to attend its launches and observe and document its work. This published work is my dream come true. Brilliantly written and finally designed by Nai Chang, and superbly printed, it is everything a gift book is supposed to be: a great story informed by extraordinary images... in this case one of the most absorbing stories of the twentieth century. this book treats circus as an art form
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-26
This book fills a much-needed gap in the literature on circuses, which for the most part have only examined three-ring circuses--despite the fact that circus in the United States had one ring before it had three. These books focusing on three-ring spectacles have also been, for the most part, rather dry histories that take all of the excitement out of a topic that is (to me) very stimulating. This book treats circus as the art form that it is, and puts interesting individuals and characters back into the story of the American circus with its excellent personal interviews. I wish other literature on the circus could be as engaging.

At last an intelligent book about the circus!

Review Date: 2000-06-14
In America circus books come in two categories: Children books, giving an infantile look at a kind of circus which exists, most of the time, only in the author's imagination; and "circus history" books, usually compilations of previous works on the subject repeating the same anecdotes, collection of trivia, and "facts" whose sources are often mysterious (and thus make these facts often arguable).

Ernest Albrecht's work is different: It is a knowledgeable study of the state of the American circus today -- more specifically, its recent evolution from a three-ring, commercial spectacle often disconnected with the reality of the modern world to a contemporary form of performing art.

This evolution -- or revolution -- didn't happen in one day, and its pioneers (Pickle Family Circus, Big Apple Circus and, of course, Cirque du Soleil) were not born out of thin air. When and where did their creators find their inspiration? Who were these revolutionary creators? Why did people who, by in large, had originally nothing to do with the circus decided to reinvent it? And did they actually reinvent anything?

Ernest Albrecht, a theater critic who came to develop a keen interest in the "new circus" movement, asked himself these questions and went on to find answers.

Here is a rarity in this country: a book on the circus that dispenses with the usual nostalgia attached to anything regarding the American circus and treats its subject seriously, as would be any other perfornming art. As such, it is a must read for anyone interested in the theater, the performing arts in general, and (evidently) the circus arts. It is also a must read for any curious mind -- any one who wishes to see the circus from a point of view different from what P.T. Barnum wanted us to believe when he launched his "Greatest Show On Earth" as a uniquely American commercial venture more than one and a half century ago.

Extremely useful guide to US-Nicaragua relations in the 80s
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-07
Excellent research source for students, scholars and journalists, this chronology lets the Contra vs. Sandinista conflict, and the U.S. response to it, unfold as it really happened. Much of the story is told through quotes from contemporary sources, allowing the reader to watch the conflict (and its resolution) unfold as the events occurred. Thorough footnoting also permits readers to access the original sources, making the book especially useful for researchers, writers and students.

Best source I've found for US-Nicaragua relations in the 80s

Review Date: 1998-07-19
This book was the most useful one I found for researching U.S.-Nicaragua relations in the 1980s. Instead of wasting pages with the authors' political opinions, like so many other books about this subject, this book simply tells us what happened in the words of contemporary sources. And, contrary to the opinion of the booklist reviewer above, who must have been an ardent and rather close-minded Sandinista apologist, the book's sources include people of every political persuasion: the Sandinistas, the Contras, the Sandinista-controlled media, the U.S. media, the official news service of Cuba, Nicaragua's independent media, La Prensa, religious, labor and peasant groups in Nicaragua and officials of the Sandinista government, Cuban government and Reagan and Bush Administrations.

This is in response to the previous review from the russian reviewer- This book is expensive because it is not destined for the general public but for libraries which operate as business do, with other concerns besides the price of books. As far as this volume is concerned I am sure that anyone who is initiated and seriously interested in scholarly study of Nietzsche will appreciate these articles, but I might suggest going to your local university library to read it.

I couldn't afford to buy this book. I wonder what it is. I wonder if the words are typed on the page using cocaine or speed or acid or something. I mean for that kind of money, what the hell are you getting? IT'S ONLY DEAD TREES FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!!! Do not buy this book. You can get those trashy romance novels for like $2.

Having known and studied under Carroll Arnett, I can only say that he lived the words he wrote. He lived his life simply, and with great joy, and found the beauty and pain (sometimes the same) in life that we so often pass by without observation. Carroll saw those things in life that most of us don't, but he also passed his wisdom along to those of us in his wake. This collection of poetry from a long and productive career neither spans nor reflects any "academic," popular "literary" movements -- from year to year, Arnett found the cadence in his heart and the sound of the world around him, into which he was completely intuned, and put it on the paper - honestly and clearly. We all miss him, but we have his words to keep us going.

Carrol Arnett was a skilled player with words in a culture where the value of words is highly respected. The things that he noticed were everyday and eternal: the interactions between people, the search for an identity. All consumers of poetry should partake.
