A great book.

This book carries on the very fine writing from this author's previous work, Merging Lines. This is an exceptionally good history of railroads in America since 1970. It explains why we see which railroad companies are still operating and what happened to the likes of Southern Pacific, Western Pacific, Conrail, Southern, Rio Grande, etc. It is a very easy read and hard to put down. I look forward to the next book from this author.

Drawing from numerous sources, Saunders weaves the economic and political history behind Railroading As We Know It Today into a work that is all at once comprehensive, insightful and engaging. This is no less than the Definitive Work and I have been recommending it as such to colleagues.

Having been with the Rock Island and Conrail for much of the time period covered, I can also attest that he seems to have gotten the facts not only right, but also in perspective.

Very Powerful Documentary of Man in Nature !
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-22
Jean Gaumy mentioned in the introduction, 'It'll come on its own. I don't know how. I want to go out to sea and the desire contains this seed. It can't be about reporting. It's about something else. I don't really know what. I'll have to describe. Simply describe. Avoid deception, the heroic vein. Stick with just man.'

It is a series of journey spreading across 1984 to 1998, in pursing for photographer's self-fulfillment. Doing things purely for oneself is great, and we can see Jean's total enthusiam into the process. Travelling with ordinary fishmen, everything is like adventures on those traditional trawlers. The process can be dangerous and fruitful. Excellent capture of environment in low light condition using high speed film, where you can see the magic of night and sea. It also includes excerpt from Jean's diary, hand-drawing, and page-clippings. Very rich media combining with visual images. We can taste some subtle changes of photographer's body and mind, which is behind the scene.

A raw and original presentation of images presents a powerful record of struggle between human and nature.

Forget Titanic. Jean Gaumy's are some moving images, from heart.

A truly remarkable book

Men At Sea by photojournalist and world traveler Jean Gaumy is a strikingly vivid, largely pictorial presentation of the life and work of a commercial fisherman surviving and working aboard deep sea trawlers. The unforgettable imagery of black-and-white photographs is combined with reproductions of hand-written log and journal entries. A truly remarkable book, and as close a glimpse to life at sea as one can get without personally living among the waves, Men At Sea is a strongly recommended acquisition for school and community library collections.

This atlas is great if you are planning to drive around Great Britain. It includes helpful blow-ups of each city for orientation and excellent detail. We traveled around Great Britain for 2 weeks and never got lost!

I recently did a 12 day driving tour of southern Ireland with this atlas as a companion and I never got lost. Very clear, and well laid out. I'm going to use it again for a trip to England and Scotland in the fall. If you going to Great Britain or Ireland, you can't go wrong with this guide. So enjoy, stay left, and. . ."mind the pedestrians."

The Standard Reference for Strategic/Military Statistics
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-08
The IISS have been publishing this annual for many years and it has become the
authoritative reference work for data on world armed forces*. It consists mainly of
comprehensive listings of the orders of battle of each nation's armed forces. Data includes
numbers, types of platforms, command and organisational sturctures. Commentary is also
provided for each of the major regions that the work is divided into i.e.the United States,
NATO-Europe, Non-NATO Europe, Asia, etc. These sections are chiefly concerned with
defence procurement issues.
For more in depth analysis of strategic and geopolitical issues one should look at the
companion annual Strategic Survey which is also published by the Institute.
*Jane's publish more detailed annuals separately for Navies, Air Forces etc but
The Military Balance is the best overview in a single volume.

Essential if needing information on specifics of militaries
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-29
While the price is high for such a small book, the information you get is well worth it. With this title you get all the information on units of the world's militaries, including defense budgets and where units are deployed. I did expect however that more information could be covered, such as for example they list bases and flight hours for some countries, but not all. This is well up to date, 4th quarter 2000. NOTE: I haven't seen any book as organized as this one - though I'm sure Jane's would have one, but probably for a few hundred to almost a thousdand dollars for it.

The 2nd part of the auto-biography of a Master Movie Maker

Review Date: 1996-06-11

This is the 2nd part of Michael Powell's auto-biography.

Now regarded as one of the most important British Movie Makers (The Red Shoes, The Life & Death of Colonel Blimp, A Matter of Life & Death, Tales of Hoffmann etc etc). Here Michael tells his own colourful story.

Often quoted by Martin Scosese as a major influence on his work (and later a personal friend).

The Story of an Historically Important Holllywood Director

From Front Flap:

"To filmgoers, the logo of 'The Archers,' a target with arrows zinging into it, announces a few hours of unforgettable magic. For the great British director Michael Powell and his partner, Emeric Pressbuger - The Archers - created such extraordinary movies as the now legendary 'Red Shoes,' 'Black Narcissus,' 'I Know Where I'm Going!', and "A Matter of Life and Death': beautiful, dramatic, mystical, and highly original movies that have enchanged audiences around the world and have influenced a generation of filmmakers.

A brilliant storyteller on the screen, Michael Powell (who died in 1990) wrote his life story with characteristic imagination, wit, charm, and the sensitivity of a true artist. In 'Million Dollar Movie,' he takes us along on his adventures behind the sets in the company of such figures as Deborah Kerr, Peter Finch, Henri Matisse, Orson Welles, Audrey Hepburn, Juan Peron, Dirk Bogarde, and Akira Kurosawa. It's often a bumpy ride.
...
This is an inside look at what it takes to make great movies, to be a great artist today. It's the fascinating story of a singular man, dedicated to his craft, who fought for what he believed in and never gave up."

This is another great work by William H. Miller. Excellent choice of photographs throughout. Lots of unique ships - both exterior and interior shots. It's very interesting to compare the various ship designs and how the vessels were renamed, rebuilt, lengthened, etc. Get a copy if you can.

This boom is a must for any cruise ship lover. See the beginnings of the cruise ship era with ships like the Canberra and QE2, before seeing the modern RCCLs. Miller does another great job with this one with not only the pictures, and stats, but also the facts.
