A Day in the Fall is an interesting novella that provides a brief
glimpse into the mind of a vet of the first gulf war. Any one who has had friends lost to war can identify with the changes to
ones mind that occur in that situation. Recomended to all vets.

This collection of large photographs of the people and places in Italy is absolutely stunning. The photos include not only the popular landmarks but also the people, their families, and is able to portray more than just the "touristy" part of Italy.

It is a shame that it is out of print! It is the perfect "coffee table" book!

Death Shift tells of the mysterious deaths of babies in a San Antonio hospital in 1981. The incidents stopped when nurse, Genene Jones, left. She moved to Kerrville and began working for a clinic. Again young children began to die abruptly. The book analyzes why a nurse would kill the patients she was trained to save. Gripping account!

"The Death Shift, a riveting story of true crime and justice, is a journalistic tour de force. It's all there. You finish the last page with no questions left. Through his meticulous reporting, Peter Elkind finds answers to questions that even the prosecutors could not fathom. This angel of mercy with a needle emerges as one of the most terrifying serial killers in the history of crime in America. No murder victims were ever more innocent. Reading about their fate will bring a lump to your throat." --Edna Buchanan, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the Miami Herald and author of The Corpse Had a Familiar Face

"The Death Shift is a gripping true crime story, but it is more than that too. Peter Elkind has gotten hold of the nature of pure evil, and the inability of a medical bureaucracy to extirpate it." --Nicholas Lemann, author of Out of the Forties

"It is regrettable that in recent years non-fiction crime books have become, in large part, a mediocre genre. Elkind's book restores the genre to the level of quality intended by its creators--Capote and Thompson. The Death Shift is not merely reportage. The author's eye for detail, his ability to sift through a mountain of raw data and pinpoint the salient facts, his sense of the dramatic--most of all, his empathy with each and every character--make this book bona fide literature. It proves what great non-fiction should; that truth is stranger than fiction." --Jim Atkinson, co-author of Evidence of Love

Who shapes public policy?

John Mermin turns the old saw -- "we lost Vietnam because the liberal press turned against the effort" -- on its head in "Debating War and Peace." Instead, Mermin suggests that the modern media fails to fulfill the important role of a free and independent press in a democratic society. Taking recent conflicts as his starting point, Mermin concludes that the modern media, rather than critically examining government policies and providing a crucial independent source of information to an informed public, frequently parrots the conventional wisdom inside the Washington Beltway. For those who are troubled by consolidation in the media industry, the trivialization of major issues, and the potential sway of a "liberal" press, this may not be such a bad result. Nevertheless, Mermin's book warns us to read the news from Washington, D.C. with a critical eye, especially in a time when the rapid-fire news-cycle prevents reporters from pursuing more than a sound-bite about the issues of the day.

Required reading for scholars and citizens alike.

This book lays out in precise detail how media coverage of recent American military interventions has been determined by the spectrum of debate within the government itself. As a result, the press has reported only a very limited set of positions vis-a-vis these wars. Consensus within the government about them has led to the appearance of national consensus, and informed dissent has in such cases gone largely unreported. For citizens whose political ideas fall to the right or left of the mainstream, and who are therefore suspicious of the government's agendas, this should be unsettling news indeed. Though Mermin's account is measured and aims at ideological neutrality, the implications might well be grounds for outrage on the part of anyone who cares about the twin ideal of democratic process and informed citizenry.

As reviewed in May 2006 Foreign Service Journal:
"From time to time a book comes along that illustrates a truth familiar to the professional diplomat: domestic parameters within interacting countries often explain the goals and conduct of foreign policy. A classic in this genre, Dr. Stern's "Defense Relations" should be required reading for every advanced class in International Relations. Beyond a meticulous review of the policy process in both countries, Stern's analysis highlights the private and public actors who are part of the policy process, including American legislators who block initiatives and Vietnames generals and bureaucratics who are disparaging, feaful and unimaginative."

My boss made me read this book.
Thank GOD for my boss! Only the author himself could possibly know more about the subject than my boss.

This book is required for a complete understanding of the dynamics of this once troubled relationship.

DeLorean was a great man, like Henry Ford. I regret how the British government treated him. It just shows that our antitrust laws can be circumvented on the global scale. Big business doensn't like competition. On a happy note, they still manufacture DeLorean's if you want to buy one. They're in the price range of 20 grand. Not bad for a great car that has style. DeLorean was a great Christian man who was blackmailed by our own government for the sake of big business. Between English government and our own government, it just shows how our government has become of the rich and powerful, by the rich and powerful and for the rich and powerful.

THE book on the technics of the De Lorean!

The De Lorean DMC-12 (manufactured 1981-1982) was and remains to this day an automobile classic of all time--not only because of its superb styling and its role in the "Back to the Future" films but also because its history typified the central theme of Greek tragedy: a fatal flaw (in this case, reliance on unfulfiled promises of the British government), eliciting pity and fear in those witnessing it. This book, providing reprints of the most important motor magazine articles evaluating the car, is a must for De Lorean fans. To be sure, Clarke's book should be purchased along with John Z. DeLorean's autobiography (titled, simply, "DeLorean," Zondervan, 1985) and the second edition of John Lamm's "De Lorean: The Stainless Steel Illusion" (Red Lion Press, 2003). It is of more than passing interest that John DeLorean himself, having created a genuinely transcendent automobile--one that is indeed timeless. as this book illustrates--ultimately became a Christian believer.

I was in this company during the campaign. It is a good overall view of what was going on at that time. If you are interested in the overall company picture, this is the book you should read. If you are looking for individual crew accounts of action then it is not.

I was an Army tanker during Desert Storm so when I saw this book I had to snap it up and see how the Marine tankers did things. This book is a very interesting read and provides a grunt eye view of Desert Storm from the turret of a Marine Tank. Most of the book deals with deployment and training. When the ground war finally starts you feel as if you are riding in the turret with the author. He does not bore you with tons of names or tries to show you how clever he is by using all kinds of technical jargon. The writing is concise and even if you do not have any knowledge of Marine Corps Armor Operations you can still read this book and enjoy it.

I'm an anthropology student at Hunter College in New York. Professor Creed teaches here, and this semester I took his "Families and Households in Anthropology" Class. He's an amazing professor, and I look forward to reading this book. If his class reflects anything in the book, I am sure it will be great!

Great insight into Bulgarian village social/economic life

Once you get by some of the academic gobbledygook, this book delivers great insight into the challenges of a Bulgarian village making the economic transition. Creed has obviously 'lived the life' there, as opposed to just parachuting in for a couple weeks. I lived there too and can attest to the veracity of his observations. This is about the best book I can think of for anyone who wants to really know about the people and lifestyle of Bulgaria over the last 40 years.

Retrospective 2000-A New Look at the Downwave

Review Date: 2000-04-19
Beckman's analysis of the Downwave in the early 1980's was a masterpiece of the application of Kondratiev theory to contemporary American economics and politics. He basically made the astonding predictions of the future of the American economy when many Americans believed we were heading to another round of hyper-inflation. Some of his economic forecasts:

(1) Collapse of the interest rates from 18% to 6% (2) The Collapse of Gold and Silver prices from a high of $850 to $280 per ounce. (3) Rise of Conservative Republican politics for the 1980's to 1993. (4) The coming creative destruction of the old technology in favor of the NEW TECH ECONOMY. (5) THE COLLAPSE OF THE STOCK MARKET AND RISE OF BLUE CHIP STOCK MARKET ECONOMY. (6) The rise of the new underclass known\ as homeless and other blue collar groups. (7) The bottome of crisis in 1999-2000 formally ending the deflation cup.

The updates to his theoretical analysis can be seen in Myron H. Ross, A Gale of Creative Destruction which gives a brilliant analysis of the 5th Upwave of wealth and prosperity and Harry Denton's The Roar 2000 builds a baby boomer portfolio on the theoretical foundations of these two early works. Beckman has to be credited with giving the general public and scholarly community a wake up call on the impact of economic cycles on the daily lives of American citizens. He even gave all the readers the greatest investment advice of the 1980's buy Treasury Bonds at 18% for the 20 year period. Bravo, to Mr. Beckman for being right!

Longwave prediction of deflation, fully researched

Bob Beckman - one time wall street investor, current fund manager prolific author and publisher of a London based journal since 1968. This book is both theoretical, imperical and provides practical advice on investing in and protecting one's assets from deflationary financial dislocations. This book deals with longwave economic cycles and was first published in 1982. The author examines the posibility of long wave (Kondratieff) cycles with a periodicity in the 55-70 year range. Demonstrations of the phenomenon is made through a number of price charts - including one for grain prices in the UK going back several hundred years, and one for intrest rates dating back several thousand. Stock market history is discussed and parallels drawn between 1929 and predicted similar events during the late 80's. Well researched and written in an approachable style, it makes interesting reading for anyone wishing to develop a broad perspective on matters financial. His thinking seems to be more relevant now in 1997 than when the book was first written. Take the predicted dates and scale of the calamity anticipated with an appropriate pinch of salt. I enjoyed it at do not hesitate to reccomend it.

One of the best books I have ever read. It has all the elements of a future classic. The characters are well written and as the story goes on you become one of the characters. Scanlan can make you cry with the characters as they go through growing up and becoming adults, as well as showing what real friendship and love is all about.

It was an excellent book - a great read.

The book was basically about friendship between three girls - Cassie, Aileen and Laura.

Once I started the book I found it hard to put it down.

The book covered the three girls' friendship over a period of time. Patricia Scanlan is one of my favoutite authors - I have read nearly all of her books and love them all.
