This book is a unique book that profiles successful online entrepreneurs. We could find their motivation, strong point, business model, etc. Because the market is getting cold, rational and systematic business model is becoming important. This book suggested the ways for final winner in business. This book profiles twelve entrepreneurs who have started successful online businesses and provides information on the companies they founded, why they founded them, and how they succeeded. These entrepreneurs have been winners of Ernst & Young's prestigious "Entrepreneur-of-the-Year" awards. From person-to-person interviews with each entrepreneur such as founder of eBay, priceline, etc we could find their secret, important know-hows. I strongly recommend this book.

This book would have made MY teen years easier!

I was prompted to buy this book when I read that Tyra Banks credits it as a major reason why she did not experiment with drugs or sex at an early age. As her mom had with her, I plan on sharing this book with my daughter when she is 10, in advance of all of the pre-teen and teen experiences and situations she will undoubtedly find herself in. My expectation is that her knowledge about these topics and many more discussed in this excellent book will enable her to make more informed decisions. Thus, I believe it may help her to resist a certain amount of negative peer pressure. This book presents a lot of information that would assist EVERY teen in navigating through what are arguably the most difficult years of our lives.

Three fingers up and the thumb and index finger in a circle: This book is A-OK!!! I recommend it highly.

I picked this one up after hearing the 3rd movement on the Amadeus Soundtrack. The piece is easy to play, and beautiful. Now I just need to find another person to play the second part, although they're similar enough that I can jump back and forth.

This cataloge of the recent exhibition "Pop Impressions Europe/USA" at the Museum of Modern Art in NY, added immensely to to my understanding of the pop art movement. it makes it evident that pop was a global movement and not solely American. Also, the organization of the book is themeatic, with such catagories as "Mass Media" and "Erotica" helping to clarify the feeling of the time period. "Pop Impressions" is also lavishly illustrated with color reproductions (almost one on every page), a necessity with this art movement.

Adele Fiderer helps take the mystery out of portfolios--a great assessment tool for showing student progress throughout the year. Show don't tell parents how their children are progressing. Blackline masters are right there for self-assessment, book lists, interest inventories, and more. You'll love this book whether you are teaching primary or intermediate grades.

Wonderful retellings of traditional ballads

KV Johansen has taken a number of medieval ballads (story-telling songs) and retold them as short stories. The overall effect is like a book of fairy tales, with princes and princess, witches and transformations. If you have any interest in European folk tales and legends, traditional music, or fantasy stories, this collection is a wonderful treat. Rarely have I read anything so rich in tradition and beautifully told.

An important question. But what are the answers?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-13
New technology means we can test for the gender of a child before birth. It's a technology that is available worldwide, in even the poorest of countries.

But what are the consequences?

This even handed little book discusses all possible answers to that questions. Ethical concerns have plagued gender diagnosis from the start. Those who favor using such methods stress being able to test for possible genetic problems, such as females with a genetic disposition for breast cancer. However, others have decried the procedures. In general, "Christian traditions oppose for sex-selective purposes" (p 7).

Gender diagnosis goes on unabated now. "Between 1988 and 2003, there was a 33-fold increase in the annual manufacture of ultrasound equipment," (p 63) in India. Girl children were never preferred in the societies of China and India but before today there was no way to tell the gender of the child before birth. The new technology has cost the lives of fully 100 million females in China and India alone.

Anyone interested in the subject will want to read "Missing Daughters" about the 100 million women lost to abortion in India and China, and "Bare Branches" which discusses the consequences of having a huge surplus of men. "Bare Branches" argues that "history, biology, and sociology all suggest that these 'surplus males' will generate high levels of crime and social disorder...Even worse...is the possibility that the governments of India and China will build up huge armies in order to provide a safety valve" (78).

As we continue on this path, what will be the consequences?

Space Exploration - update needed!!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-23
I purchased this book in a thrift store and was amazed at how much information is in it. The book, being 14 years old now in 2006, is really more of a history book with respect to space exploration but is a wonderful read nonetheless. Written in the UK, there is no pro nation slant as many other books about space tend to be. Many areas of space are covered and all in a thorough and very clearly written way. My only complaint is that it needs an update. Surely this book as-is plus the events occurring in space over the past 14 years would make an excellent book worthy of reading by anyone interested in space. New topics such as space tourism, the ongoing construction of the International Space Station, and the most recent missions to Mars would be some of the new additions to this book. That said, I highly recommend this book and would readily purchase a second edition were it ever to become available.

Personal Memoir Of Man Who Served On Both Sides.

Review Date: 2004-09-20
"Stars And Swastikas" by Walter Schroder. Subtitled: "The Boy Who Wore Two Uniforms". Archon Books, 1992.
This is a personal memoir of a young German boy, born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, but growing up in Germany during the Second World War. During the Great Depression, the parents of Walter Schroder returned to Germany for economical reasons. So, young Walter had to adjust to using the German language every day in school and was "tagged" as an outsider because of his accent. As the Second World War wore on, Walter Schroder was fundamentally drafted in the Luftwaffe, the German Air Force, which had responsibility for anti-aircraft weapons. The book begins with the end of the war and the capture of Schroder's Luftwaffe unit by British troops, with his subsequent incarceration in a British POW camp. Schroder used his ability to speak English, (even though he sounded like a "Yank"), to help himself and his fellow prisoners . Then, it was discovered that he was born in the United States, one thing leads to another, and he is set free in England, returns to the Continent where he joins the Untied States Army, and before he reaches the age of 21 years, he has served both Germany and the U.S., both "Stars And Swastikas". Excellent memoir.
